I actually found that website and gave it a read-over before I posted my query
here.

I was actually hoping that there were other developments not listed there,
specifically for freedos.

During my searching around, I discovered that you can boot freedos over pxe,
which is very cool, but nothing about showing a logo on boot.  I guess the
necessary technique would be such a horrible hack that nobody has created it.

Too bad.  I use dosemu/freedos to  run several single-purpose programs on
various desktops and it would be nice to show the users a logo, or
something prettier than a black screen with white letters, during the second or
so that it takes freedos to boot in the window.
