YES!!!!
Thank you _SOOOO_ much!!!
It works using SSH across my local LAN, and I have no reason to expect
that it won't work across the Internet too.
Using the -C parameter (to compress data), it works very comfortably.
Without the -C the print preview completely crawls (because it's a
graphic mode), though this was not necessary for WordPerfect in normal
text mode.
