Instal dosemu with MS-DOS 6.2

I am trying to install dosemu on  a Mandrake 9.1 system and use MS-DOS
6.2 rather than freedos.   I have not had any luck at all.   I am NOT
very savy with Linux and do not understand the file structures or
command line prompts, although I have a good knowledge of DOS and batch
files..   I find the instructions which come with the tar file too
cryptic.

All I get is error messages when I try to launch dosemu.

If anyone could steer me is the right direction I would be most
appreciative.

That's the way I did it, although not with Mandrake.  Shouldn't matter.

You're not the only one.  I hope this is better, although it's a while
since I did it so I may have missed something.

All you need to do is install 1.1.4.15, put the MSDOS files in the
right directory and you'll be up and running.  If you have a Mandrake
system, I believe you will be starting with a GUI by default.  You may
need to fiddle with inittab in your system to start Linux without it.
Using X (which is what the GUI more or less is) while you're doing all
this adds a layer of complexity we don't need just yet.

1.  Grab the 1.1.4 tar file "dosemu-1.1.4.tgz"
2.  Grab the 1.1.4.15 patchset "patchset-1.1.4.15.tgz"
3.  Choose a directory to work in: I always use
    /home/ged/src/
    and cd to it as a normal user (not root).
4.  Unpack the 1.1.4 tar file: you now have a directory
    /home/ged/src/dosemu-1.1.4
    which I renamed dosemu-1.1.4.15 but it's not necessary.
5.  cd to that directory
6.  Unpack the 1.4.15 patchfile - it creates a directory tmp, i.e.
    /home/ged/src/dosemu-1.1.4/tmp
7.  Run the command
    sh tmp/do-patch
    and wait for things to finish
8.  Run the command
    make
9.  su root
10. Run the command
    make install
11. By now you should have all the directories etc. you need
12. exit from the root shell back to your normal user
13. Copy the MSDOS files into the directory created by the build
    in my system it's
    /home/ged/dosemu/freedos
14. Run the command
    dosemu
15. Let me know what happens.  Especially if I forgot something in
    these instructions.  There might be a 1.1.4.16 patchset by now.
16. When this is all working, you can fire up your GUI again and it
    will possibly break something for dosemu.  That's your problem. :)
