I've been trying to get System Shock running under dosemu, but with no
luck. When I try to run it, I get a black screen, then get dumped back to
the prompt with a Salt the Fries error, "Could not find palette."
I've tried it both in X and at the console, with _console and _graphics
enabled, with the same result.
What do I need to do to get it working?

A debug log would help (run with -D+a -o /tmp/debug.log) along with
mentioning your dosemu and kernel version, and system configuration.

-D9+a log can be very big, I think it
would be an overkill to post it here
in order to only find out the dosemu
version in use.
System Shock was tested and works with
the recent dosemus (not with an older
ones of course), so unless the version
is known, there is not too much of a help
to provide.

Yesterday, I tried to post the log (bzip2'd, even). It never showed up, so
I guess the list just trashed it.
Linux 2.4.22, Gentoo patches, dosemu 1.1.99.1, X 4.3.0, ATI Mobility.

Gentoo guys were always keen to provide
an up-to-date dosemu version, but unfortunately
it is known to have some problems because
of the optimisation they use (in general
compiling dosemu with more than -O2 gives
problems).
So it would be nice if you try a fresh
1.1.99.1, or even 1.1.3/CVS and let us
know how it works. If it works, then you'll
have to contact gentoo' support instead.
Because System Shock works perfectly here
on both 1.1.3 and 1.1.99.1.

I compiled both 1.1.99.1 and 1.1.5, with the same error from each. I
didn't touch the freedos installation, or the files in my home directory.
For anyone who's interested, the log (from 1.1.99.1) is at
shadowspire.net/debug.log.bz2

Well, I was poking around a SS faq, and found something mentioning that a
palette error can be caused by bad sound settings. I turned sound off, and
it runs fine. After fiddling with the sound settings, it runs now with
sound effects, and I'll watch the sound thread for getting my midi working.
Thanks to those who tried.
