Just moved from RedHat to Debian (Libranet 2.8.1), and installed the
binaries with a local install. I forget how to get out of this vga error
scenario (I have readlink on my system, by the way):
You do not have the DOSEMU vga font installed and are running
remote X. You need to install the vga font on your _local_ Xserver.
Look at the readme for details. For now we start with an fixed font,
which does not display all national characters correctly.
... be warned
ERROR: Unable to open console to evaluate the keyboard map.
Please specify your keyboard map explicitly via the $_layout option
ERROR: X: Unable to open font "vga"ERROR: , trying "vga"...
ERROR: X: Unable to open font "vga"ERROR: , trying "9x15"...

I already tried 'xset fp default' since I know that worked for me under
RedHat 8 when I had similar problems. This time it fails to resolve the
problem. Here's what I find in the above directory:
ralvy@libranet:~$ ls -l /home/ralvy/dosemu/freedos/../Xfonts
total 36
-rw-r--r-- 1 ralvy ralvy 425 Jun 6 15:32 fonts.alias
-rw-r--r-- 1 ralvy ralvy 14 Oct 15 21:00 fonts.dir
-rw-r--r-- 1 ralvy ralvy 24632 Nov 4 1995 vga.pcf

Just to be clear on this, the first entry for Font Path, as reported by
'xset q' is
/home/ralvy/dosemu/freedos/../Xfonts
And I have readlink installed.

try
xset fp default
if that doesn't help then check the contents of the above directory.
