I recently switched to Ubuntu GNU/Linux (debian based) and had problems with dosemu. Finally, I ended up by sending a mail to the debian package maintainer. He answered quickly, found a workaround and the whole thing is now filed in Launchpad: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/dosemu-freedos/+bug/56778 so there's still hope especially now that FreeDOS 1.0 has been released :)
