Anyone else who has stupid broken autoresponders that send crap _anywhere_
but the SMTP reverse-path, save me the trouble and unsubscribe from the
list now.

That would be linux-mtd-admin@lists.infradead.org, right? You prefer
to receive crap rather than having it sent back to the originator?

At least tell us what kind of crap you've seen...

It would. I'm perfectly capable of removing crap from my inbox - I object
to it getting sent to my lists.

Hm. I note that formail tends to look at the From: address, which IMHO
is the correct thing to do.

Huh? This virus scanner is looking at the To: address?!?

No. The From address is not the SMTP reverse-path. This message, for
example, has a From address dwmw2@infradead.org but the SMTP reverse-path,
to which errors should go, is dwmw2@redhat.com. (Unless it goes through
the list, in which case the reverse-path gets changed to linux-mtd-admin@,
so that errors in list delivery go to the list admin, not the original
sender.)

Or something equally stupid. Hence abuse@ their ISP getting CC'd on the
complaint.

Um, let me be more clear. If I want to bounce emails which, say, have
a high proportion of high-bit characters (guess why:-), I want them to
go to the From: address (i.e. the original sender), not the list
administrator. I think that's a good thing, since I want to apply the
clue-by-four to the sender, and not the list admin.

And formail looks at the From: address nicely, just the way I like it
:-)

In that case, it makes some sense, yes. Unless you also obey Reply-To and
encounter a list which stupidly sets the Reply-To header to go back to the
list - another common combination of idiocies.

As long as you don't respond to messages with _NULL_ reverse-path (i.e.
error messages), that is.

Yeah, stupid Reply-To: set by some arrogant list administrators
(XFree86 and ISC, to name two). The hardline approach is: tough.
But there is an easy solution to that as well:

| sed -e 's/^Reply-To:.*@isc\.org/Bogus-&/'

> As long as you don't respond to messages with _NULL_ reverse-path
> (i.e. error messages), that is.

Hm. Never tried that. Not sure what happens, but I suspect the
auto-reply would be bounced back. That's harmless (easy to filter to
/dev/null).

Before anyone else asks... yes, cvs.infradead.org is down. Its PSU started
making funny noises last night and it kept rebooting. I've retrieved it and
replaced the PSU with one which still has the magic smoke in, and it seems
much happier now.

I'm taking the opportunity to put the correct hard drive in it (after I
picked the wrong one off the shelf last time it needed attention), and
upgrade it to Red Hat 7.3. It should be back out there in a few hours.

Btw, it's possible that the other box, lists.infradead.org, will be looking
for a new home in the fairly near future. If you can offer it a nice home
with clean power and a fairly small amount of bandwidth, please contact me
off-list.

Sorry for the error which caused a handful of bounces to get sent back
out to the list. I've fixed the mailman setup now.

I've also unsubscribed the two users whose mail was bouncing:

	fuganti@conectiva.com.br
	joern@wohnheim.fh-wedel.de

And while I was cleaning out the queue I've also kicked a couple of
users with only a single MX host:

          yves.clousier@synchronic.fr
          asoneofus@nm.ru

dangerous autoreply, replying to the address in the From: header instead
of the SMTP reverse-path.

If you ever get autoreplies to mail you sent to the list, please let me
know immediately and I'll kick the offending subscriber.

Remember, kids.... autoreplies must go _only_ to the SMTP reverse-path
(the 'MAIL FROM:<...>' address in the SMTP transaction), and must always
have an empty reverse-path of their own, like bounces.

I'm about to change these lists to use VERP on outgoing mail --
including the recipient's address in the reverse-path of each mail to
make it easier to track bounces.

Since the most reliable way to filter list mail is by its reverse-path,
I figured I ought to give a little bit of notice of the change -- so if
you were filtering on the reverse-path
'linux-XXX-bounces@lists.infradead.org' you will now need to match
'linux-XXX-bounces.*@lists.infradead.org' instead, if in fact you're not
already doing so.
