Hello!
I'm trying to get my Linux to boot its root filesystem from flash
(JFFS2) on the following hardware:
Motorola MVME2100 with a MPC8240 MicroController (with PowerPC 603e CPU
and MPC107 bridge)
I'm using the 2.4.25 kernel from kernel.org with minor patches for my
board (platform init stuff).
My board contains a 4MB flash bank mapped into memory at 0xFF000000.
(my kernel config is attached)
When booting up it is detected like this:
physmap flash device: 400000 at ff000000
CFI: Found no Physically mapped flash device at location zero

Found: AMD AM29LV800BT
Physically mapped flash: Found 4 x16 devices at 0x0 in 32-bit mode
number of JEDEC chips: 1
ftl_cs: FTL header not found.
I'm using the kernel.org version because I didn't get the latest snapshot
to work (the autodetection seems to ignore my flash bank - if I configure
it 2.4.25 with a physical mapping given in the kernel config it is
detected)
(BTW, does mtdparts work in 2.4.25, and under what conditions? I'm giving
mtdparts=0:1m(kernel)ro,-(rootfs) and it seems to be ignored...)
Because the FTL header is missing I thought I should ftl_format the
device (ok, I'm a pretty green newbie to this!!! :) ), but when doing so
I get a kernel panic (see below).
Thanks in advance,
Oliver Korpilla

There's no need in ftl when using jffs2, it is only needed when
using "traditional" filesystems upon mtds.
Just mount jffs2 on the block mtd device (don't forget to previously
erase the device using erase(all) utility) and you're done.
wbr, Dmitry.

Thanks, and I'll keep that in mind, but eraseall failed, too, the same
way. I'll try again, though, just to be sure.

I've just noticed that you're compiling official kernel sources. They
don't contain last mtd sources, which can be found in mtd cvs (how to
use that cvs described at http://linux-mtd.infradead.org/).
wbr, Dmitry.
