Hello
This is a bug report concerning the erase-block-summary (EBS) feature:
We're using JFFS2 as our root filesystem on our embedded device. Our
device is a custom hardware based around a Hynix ARM H7202 processor.
We're using Intel Strata Flash (NOR). See any of the attached kernel log
files for more information.
JFFS2 works fine so far (without EBS). We hope to improve the mount time
with the EBS feature. We're currently using the 2.6.13 kernel, and I
patched the MTD subsystem with a current version of the MTD CVS
(09-09-2005). The patched kernel boots happily when EBS is disable, both
with sumtool-processed images and with normal non-processed images. (see
without-ebs-with-sumtool.txt and without-ebs-without-sumtool.txt logfiles).
As soon as I enable EBS I get a kernel panic (see
with-ebs-with-sumtool.txt logfile). I'm pretty sure that the image is
not corrupt, as the first two tests with EBS disable show. Also, I'm
using a script to upload new kernel and rootfs images. So there should
not have been anything gone wrong during the copy process!
Here are the steps I used to build the root filesystem:
mkfs.jffs2 -p 6291456 -d ./rootfs -e 128KiB -l -v -U -D
./devicetable.txt -o ./rootfs.tmp
sumtool -i ./rootfs.tmp -o ./rootfs.img -e 128KiB -l -v
If you need more information, just let me know.
Best regards,
Simon Kallweit

Hi Simon!
Let me explain what I see in your log.
The log of "with sumtooled image but without EBS kernel support" shows a
lot of "unknow but compatible node". These nodes are the summary nodes.
They are localated at the end of the used (and already closed) erase
blocks. The first one is at 0x0001e864 (at the end of erase block
0x00000000-0x0001FFFF), the last one is 0x0029eed8 (at the end of erase
block 0x00280000-0x0029FFFF).
With EBS support the mounting process is modified. First the scanning
process read the end of the erase block. If it is valid summary
information it is no need to read the whole erase block, if not than the
original (full) scanning process is applied for that erase block.
See the first error message:
> jffs2_scan_eraseblock(): Magic bitmask 0x1985 not found at
0x002a0000: 0x00b0 instead
It means that the problem is with the first erase block which has no
summary, so the full scanning method is applied. It try to find valid
JFFS2 nodes, but it is not succesfull, every word is 0x00b0.
Something similar happened with Pete. The original JFFS2 worked at him,
but summary did not. We was not able to find the problem, because his
image worked at us. Finally he found the bug. It was not in the JFFS2
but in his flash driver. Summary makes some "tricks": read from the end
of the erase block, if there is no summary go back to the begining of
it. If the flash driver buggy than it doesn't like it.
I suggest you should dump what is at 0x002a0000, and later (without
mounting, for example with jffs2dump tool). I suppose it should not be
0x00b0 - but your flash driver give it back, after tracking back. So my
first tip is that there is a bug in your flash driver.
You also may send us (or make it downloadable for us) your image to
analize (and try if it works at us).
I am also curious what happen with EBS support but without sumtool. I
should mount without problem because it recognise it is not summarized
image, so apply the original scanning method.
And finaly it may also be more informative to set the JFFS2 debug level
1 to get more debug message (the summary debug messages is the most
important for us)
Bye,
Ferenc

I wonder, why don't you do the same trick that I did for fragtree build
messages and the like, (see debug.h) to be able on/off your summary
messages independently. Believe me, this is very handy to have a
possibility to filter unneeded flood.

We are already using it. I rewrote our debug messages to use your debug
stuff before commiting the patch, and added a "#define
JFFS2_DBG_SUMMARY_MESSAGES" into debug.h. (or do you think about an
other thing?)
I agree, it is really usefull.

No, I jus did not look at the last debug.h :-) pardon.

Hm, interesting.
This is 2.6.13 with mtd-cvs from yesterday (actually I produced the
error with other versions also IIRC, trying to reproduce actually):
Kernel says:
JFFS2 warning: (1) jffs2_sum_scan_sumnode: Summary node crc error, skipping summary information.
jffs2_scan_eraseblock(): Magic bitmask 0x1985 not found at 0x00000000: 0x00b0 instead

jffs2_scan_eraseblock(): Magic bitmask 0x1985 not found at 0x00000024: 0x00b0 instead
Further such events for this erase block will not be printed
a dozen of times...
Bootloader says:
scb9328> md 0x10240000
10240000: 20031985 0000000c e41eb0b1 e0011985
emacs on flashed image says:
00000000: 8519 0320 0c00 0000 b1b0 1ee4 8519 01e0
So all is fine. Where is the Kernel reading 0x00b0 from?
> image worked at us. Finally he found the bug. It was not in the
Hm, I will search the archive then... Same Bug seems to be here.
Is the mapping code in maps meant by "flashdriver"?
> I am also curious what happen with EBS support but without sumtool.
jffs2_scan_eraseblock(): Magic bitmask 0x1985 not found at 0x00000000:
0x00b0 instead
and so on ...

Doesn't either :(

What a pity, he did not elaborate on that.
I use intel with cfi_cmdset_0001.c.
What I also have with the 2.6.13 Kernel is:
Inode #278 was a directory with children - removing those too...
What does that mean?
Misteriously at the same time mounting virgin jffs2 on 2.6.12 broke
and the XIP in 2.6.13 is not working anymore either. May be our
maps/scb9328 is involved and has to be changed somewhere...
