Providing the patch you intend to use is for your kernel version why not.

The kernel can be called anything you want it to be called its up to you.

If you compile your own kernel and "include" disk or card drivers which are 
needed to boot the system then you dont need initrd.

Never use initrd so i cant comment.

There are plenty of sites around giving upto date info on howto compile and 
use a 2.6 kernel, i suggest once more that you use google to get more info, 
it is full of it i can assure you.
