Hi, James:

  I'll top post because your example is long.
  First: Backup your data on /dev/hdb! :-|
  Second: I recommend editing /etc/smartd.conf to include
/dev/hdb -a
  Then running
smartd
  Then
tail -f /var/log/messages
  and see whazzzup!  ;-)
