Hi, Alexander
Have you fixed the issue ? I didn't run into it when building linux-next 20081210. If it is pending, can you share the .config with me ?

This doesn't explain the build failure.

Using ->open() and friends should work perfectly fine for drivers not
yet converted to netdev_ops. The code protected by COMPAT_NET_DEV_OPS
provides this, and we force that Kconfig option to always be on.

I don't want to add this patch and just shrug off this build failure.
If this build failures, we should be seeing 200 other drivers not
build too.

I suspect something is messed up with this person's kernel config
or similar.

Thanks for noticing. I fixed it on sound git tree now.
FWIW, the patch below should fix the build problem.

Fixed the function name of module init entry for twl4030.c, which
conflicted with the existing hardware init function:

sound/soc/codecs/twl4030.c:1187: error: previous definition of 'twl4030_init' was here

Also fixed the section type of init function.

The only way for this to happen is if CONFIG_COMPAT_NET_DEV_OPS
is not set.

And we force it on in net/Kconfig:

config COMPAT_NET_DEV_OPS
       def_bool y

Perhaps you simply need to update your config properly or something
like that.

* linux-next: Tree for December 10
From: Stephen Rothwell @ 2008-12-10 5:46 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-next; +Cc: LKML

[-- Attachment #1: Type: text/plain, Size: 7759 bytes --]

Hi all,

Changes since 20081209:

Undropped tree:
	mmc

Dropped trees (temporarily):
	v4l-dvb (build problem)
	sound (build problem)
	drm (build problem)
semaphore-removal (due to unfixed conflicts against Linus' tree)
	cpu_alloc (build problem)
perfmon3 (concerns from the x86 team)
	audit (difficult conflicts)
	staging (build failure)

The mtd tree transferred its conflict to the driver-core tree (by being
merged into Linus' tree).

The sound tree gained a build failure and was dropped.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/sfr/linux-next.git
(patches at
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/sfr/linux-next/). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" as mentioned in the FAQ on the wiki
(see below).

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log files
in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built with
a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig for x86_64. After the
final fixups (if any), it is also built with powerpc allnoconfig,
44x_defconfig and allyesconfig (minus CONFIG_PROFILE_ALL_BRANCHES) and
i386, sparc and sparc64 defconfig.

Below is a summary of the state of the merge.

We are up to 131 trees (counting Linus' and 15 trees of patches pending for
Linus' tree), more are welcome (even if they are currently empty).
Thanks to those who have contributed, and to those who haven't, please do.

Status of my local build tests will be at
http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next . If maintainers want to give
advice about cross compilers/configs that work, we are always open to add
more builds.

Thanks to Jan Dittmer for adding the linux-next tree to his build tests
at http://l4x.org/k/ , the guys at http://test.kernel.org/ and Randy
Dunlap for doing many randconfig builds.

There is a wiki covering stuff to do with linux-next at
http://linux.f-seidel.de/linux-next/pmwiki/ . Thanks to Frank Seidel.

* linux-next: sound tree build failure
From: Stephen Rothwell @ 2008-12-10 5:23 UTC (permalink / raw)

[-- Attachment #1: Type: text/plain, Size: 504 bytes --]

Hi Takashi,

Today's linux-next build (powerpc allyesconfig) failed like this:

sound/soc/codecs/twl4030.c:1278: error: conflicting types for 'twl4030_init'
sound/soc/codecs/twl4030.c:1187: error: previous definition of 'twl4030_init' was here

Caused by commit 64089b84abfe2f26a864ebd968429302dcb071de ("ASoC:
Register non-AC97 codec DAIs").

I have reverted the sound tree for today.

This conflict is now in the driver-core tree as the mtd tree has been

Let's not count our chickens .... :-)

Can you get me
   tar czvf - /lib/udev /etc/udev | mail neilb

so I can see exactly what FC6 is likely to try to do when an
md device appears or disappears?

Thanks.

I added him alredy to Cc: with the last mail. :)

I guess it's something like this:
  http://neil.brown.name/git?p=md;a=commitdiff;h=6ac9b8824fd2f82fff508eecc5c74cf797e93cb2

I really hope we can fix that change, as we want to have proper
lifetime rules like this, where the devices, which are not used, do
not show up.

Weird loop, something is accessing /dev/md0, i guess, which creates
the kernel device, and the event, which accesses /dev/md0 again and it
goes crazy. Maybe caused by changes Neil did.

Do you use md devices on that box?

Maybe an event loop, caused by something.

Are you still able to run:
  udevmonitor --kernel
and see if we get events, maybe in a loop, from the kernel?

The net tree never rebases, so pulling it into your tree is fine and a
good solution. That would move the conflict resolution from my tree to
yours (which is always better since you know your code better than I do).

The only thing to remember is that the net tree should be merged into
Linus' before the nfsd tree during the merge window. (It doesn't really
matter, but is good form as then Dave will get blamed for any problems
introduced by his tree rather than you :-))

The only other downside is that if Dave's tree has a bug (in the part you
have merged) that causes me to drop it then I will have to drop your tree
as well. However, that doesn't happen very often (right, Dave? :-)).

The alternative of Dave merging your tree into his only works if you can
guarantee that you will never rebase your tree.

udevd is sitting there chewing up 100% of a CPU all the time.

The machine is x86_64, running FC6. It still happens with
CONFIG_SELINUX=n.
