* linux-next: Tree for Jun 20
From: Stephen Rothwell @ 2016-06-20 6:05 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-next; +Cc: linux-kernel

Hi all,

Changes since 20160617:

The net-next tree gained conflicts agains the net tree.

The block tree gained a conflict against the f2fs tree.

The tpmdd tree gained conflicts against Linus' tree.

The iommu tree gained a conflict against the arm tree.

The staging tree gained a conflict against the drm tree.

Non-merge commits (relative to Linus' tree): 4227
 4338 files changed, 194819 insertions(+), 76399 deletions(-)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git
(patches at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/next/ ). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" and checkout or reset to the new
master.

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log
files in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built
with a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig (with
CONFIG_BUILD_DOCSRC=n) for x86_64, a multi_v7_defconfig for arm and a
native build of tools/perf. After the final fixups (if any), I do an
x86_64 modules_install followed by builds for x86_64 allnoconfig,
powerpc allnoconfig (32 and 64 bit), ppc44x_defconfig, allyesconfig
(this fails its final link) and pseries_le_defconfig and i386, sparc
and sparc64 defconfig.

Below is a summary of the state of the merge.

I am currently merging 234 trees (counting Linus' and 34 trees of patches
pending for Linus' tree).

Stats about the size of the tree over time can be seen at
http://neuling.org/linux-next-size.html .

Status of my local build tests will be at
http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next . If maintainers want to give
advice about cross compilers/configs that work, we are always open to add
more builds.

Thanks to Randy Dunlap for doing many randconfig builds. And to Paul
Gortmaker for triage and bug fixes.

Cheers,
Stephen Rothwell

This looks like it's going to end up being broken. I self-NACK'd my v2
patch series was, and it looks like the v2 patch was picked up instead
of v1.

It's also part of a _three_ patch series, where the _second two_ patches
depend on the _first_ patch. Such series can't be split up.

which is triggered by da4d6e6d3b3ef (iommu/mediatek: Convert DT

presumably a dependency on some other patch series that is still in
review.

Yes, this came to my attention already. I will remove that patch from

I've had this in -mm (and -next) since January 4, without issues. I
put it on hold because Davidlohr expressed concern about performance
regressions.

Your [2/2] should prevent those regressions (yes?) so I assume that any
kernel which has [1/2] really should have [2/2] as well. But without
any quantitative information, this is all mad guesswork.

What to do?

(The [2/2] changelog should explain that it is the cure to [1/2]'s
regressions, btw).

I see this patch also takes care of complex_count needing READ/WRITE_ONCE
as you change that to always be done with the big sem_perm lock.

But I'm wondering about races with this one. Doesn't complex_mode need
acquire/release semantics?

This complex_mode load is serialized because both complexmode_enter() and
_tryleave(), which are the main calls that modify the variable, are serialized
by sem_perm lock, right?

We have no lock (which is the whole point), I think we need stronger
guarantees here to avoid racing with another thread that holds sem_perm
lock and is entering complexmode for the first time or vice versa with
tryleave(). An smp_load_acquire here would pair with the suggested
smp_store_release calls.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I still get this warning:

* linux-next: manual merge of the net-next tree with the arm-soc tree

To: David Miller, netdev, Olof Johansson, Arnd Bergmann,

Cc: Florian Fainelli, Pramod Kumar, linux-kernel,

Hi all,

Today's linux-next merge of the net-next tree got conflicts in:

  arch/arm64/boot/dts/broadcom/ns2-svk.dts
  arch/arm64/boot/dts/broadcom/ns2.dtsi

between commits:

97b1504a30b3 ("arm64: dts: enable pinctrl for Broadcom NS2 SoC")
  5dcc9c7618df ("arm64: dts: NS2: Add CCI-400 PMU support")

from the arm-soc tree and commit:

5f1a067bfa0a ("dt: mdio-mux: Add mdio multiplexer driver node")

from the net-next tree.

I fixed it up (see below) and can carry the fix as necessary. This
is now fixed as far as linux-next is concerned, but any non trivial
conflicts should be mentioned to your upstream maintainer when your tree
is submitted for merging. You may also want to consider cooperating
with the maintainer of the conflicting tree to minimise any particularly
complex conflicts.

Crap, sorry, PTR_ERR/ERR_PTR confusion. I *think* I fixed it now.

* linux-next: manual merge of the akpm-current tree with the arm-soc tree
From: Stephen Rothwell @ 2016-06-21 4:58 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Andrew Morton, Olof Johansson, Arnd Bergmann, linux-arm-kernel
Cc: linux-next, linux-kernel, Florian Fainelli, Prarit Bhargava

Hi Andrew,

Today's linux-next merge of the akpm-current tree got a conflict in:

  arch/arm/configs/bcm_defconfig

between commit:

  41463c3e6eae ("ARM: Remove bcm_defconfig")

from the arm-soc tree and commit:

c41079f16bf2 ("lib, switch CONFIG_PRINTK_TIME to int")

from the akpm-current tree.

I fixed it up (I just deleted the file) and can carry the fix as
necessary. This is now fixed as far as linux-next is concerned, but any
non trivial conflicts should be mentioned to your upstream maintainer
when your tree is submitted for merging. You may also want to consider
cooperating with the maintainer of the conflicting tree to minimise any
particularly complex conflicts.

* linux-next: Tree for Jun 21
From: Stephen Rothwell @ 2016-06-21 5:46 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-next; +Cc: linux-kernel

Hi all,

Changes since 20160620:

The net-next tree gained conflicts against the arm-doc tree.

The akpm-current tree gained a conflict against the arm-soc tree.

Non-merge commits (relative to Linus' tree): 4462
 4490 files changed, 203456 insertions(+), 78511 deletions(-)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git
(patches at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/next/ ). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" and checkout or reset to the new
master.

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log
files in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built
with a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig (with
CONFIG_BUILD_DOCSRC=n) for x86_64, a multi_v7_defconfig for arm and a
native build of tools/perf.

Stephen Rothwell

tilepro defconfig is failing while doing "make prepare" and bisect shows
the first bad commit as:

1af5de9af138 ("locking/atomic, arch/tile: Implement
atomic{,64}_fetch_{add,sub,and,or,xor}()")

You can find today's build log at:
https://travis-ci.org/sudipm-mukherjee/parport/jobs/139112570

Please do let me know if i can help in any way to debug/solve this.

I cannot reproduce, I tried both tip/master (which carries the patch you
fingered) and next/master.

My tilepro build ends in a vmlinux with just a single warning.

Thats strange.
The log I gave is for next-20160621.
BTW, I am using gcc-5.3.0

Looks good to me, thanks!

I don't see a good way to resolve the conflict before the merge window,
but it's simple enough that we can just send it this way and let
Linus handle it.

I agree with your observations. We'll prepare a cleanup patch to address this.

I have already made some changes. I will send you a patch for this.

On inspection, I note that the arch/tile/include/atomic_32.h header has

ATOMIC64_OP(and)
ATOMIC64_OP(or)
ATOMIC64_OP(xor)

but these should be ATOMIC64_OPS, plural.

Peter, what toolchain were you using for tilepro build testing? You need to have a tilepro toolchain (not tilegx) and build with ARCH=tilepro.

Bugger, I'll go fix. Clearly nobody has tilepro toolchains :/

> Peter, what toolchain were you using for tilepro build testing?

tilegx-linux-

> You need to have a tilepro toolchain (not tilegx)

Ah, should I go use TARGET=tilepro-linux ?

> and build with ARCH=tilepro.

        tilepro)
                ARCH=tile
                CROSS_COMPILE=tilegx-linux-
                if [ "$CONFIG" == "defconfig" ] ; then
                        CONFIG=tilepro_defconfig
                fi
                ;;

So I suppose that too is wrong.
