* linux-next: Tree for Nov 23
From: Stephen Rothwell @ 2016-11-23 6:58 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-next; +Cc: linux-kernel

Hi all,

Changes since 20161122:

The clk tree gained conflicts against the arm-soc tree (resolved today
with help).

The md tree gained a conflict against the block tree.

The kvm-ppc-paulus tree gained a conflict against the powerpc-fixes tree.

The kvms390 tree gained a conflict against the s390 tree.

The userns tree lost its complex conflicts against Linus' tree.

Non-merge commits (relative to Linus' tree): 7367
 7572 files changed, 446863 insertions(+), 165009 deletions(-)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git
(patches at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/next/ ). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" and checkout or reset to the new
master.

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log
files in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built
with a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig (with
CONFIG_BUILD_DOCSRC=n) for x86_64, a multi_v7_defconfig for arm and a
native build of tools/perf. After the final fixups (if any), I do an
x86_64 modules_install followed by builds for x86_64 allnoconfig,
powerpc allnoconfig (32 and 64 bit), ppc44x_defconfig, allyesconfig
(with KALLSYMS_EXTRA_PASS=1) and pseries_le_defconfig and i386, sparc
and sparc64 defconfig.

Below is a summary of the state of the merge.

I am currently merging 244 trees (counting Linus' and 34 trees of bug
fix patches pending for the current merge release).

Stats about the size of the tree over time can be seen at
http://neuling.org/linux-next-size.html .

Status of my local build tests will be at
http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next . If maintainers want to give
advice about cross compilers/configs that work, we are always open to add
more builds.

Thanks to Randy Dunlap for doing many randconfig builds. And to Paul
Gortmaker for triage and bug fixes.

Cheers,
Stephen Rothwell

Thanks, looks fine.

Hmmm, Martin, Heiko, KVM is going to touch that file from time to time.
Can we either have
a: a topic branch for this tool (like I did for the 4.9 merge window)
with just the patches for this tool. This topic branch can then be merged
into kvm/next and s390/features.
b: split out the kvm defines into arch/s390/tools/kvm_facilities.h

b would like something like this (cut/paste so whitespace damaged)

No, please don't split this file again. Only kvm will ever touch the kvm
facilities, so we won't any conflicts here.
This time it's only because the file moved, otherwise there wouldn't be any
problem at all.

It seems Arnd's patch deals with this.
I'll keep an eye on this.

* mmotm 2016-11-23-12-08 uploaded
From: akpm @ 2016-11-23 20:09 UTC (permalink / raw)

The mm-of-the-moment snapshot 2016-11-23-12-08 has been uploaded to

   http://www.ozlabs.org/~akpm/mmotm/

mmotm-readme.txt says

README for mm-of-the-moment:

http://www.ozlabs.org/~akpm/mmotm/

This is a snapshot of my -mm patch queue. Uploaded at random hopefully
more than once a week.

You will need quilt to apply these patches to the latest Linus release (4.x
or 4.x-rcY). The series file is in broken-out.tar.gz and is duplicated in
http://ozlabs.org/~akpm/mmotm/series

The file broken-out.tar.gz contains two datestamp files: .DATE and
.DATE-yyyy-mm-dd-hh-mm-ss. Both contain the string yyyy-mm-dd-hh-mm-ss,
followed by the base kernel version against which this patch series is to
be applied.

This tree is partially included in linux-next. To see which patches are
included in linux-next, consult the `series' file. Only the patches
within the #NEXT_PATCHES_START/#NEXT_PATCHES_END markers are included in
linux-next.

A git tree which contains the memory management portion of this tree is
maintained at git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mhocko/mm.git
by Michal Hocko. It contains the patches which are between the
"#NEXT_PATCHES_START mm" and "#NEXT_PATCHES_END" markers, from the series
file, http://www.ozlabs.org/~akpm/mmotm/series.

A full copy of the full kernel tree with the linux-next and mmotm patches
already applied is available through git within an hour of the mmotm
release. Individual mmotm releases are tagged. The master branch always
points to the latest release, so it's constantly rebasing.

http://git.cmpxchg.org/cgit.cgi/linux-mmotm.git/

To develop on top of mmotm git:

$ git remote add mmotm git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mhocko/mm.git
  $ git remote update mmotm
  $ git checkout -b topic mmotm/master
  <make changes, commit>
  $ git send-email mmotm/master.. [...]

To rebase a branch with older patches to a new mmotm release:

  $ git remote update mmotm
  $ git rebase --onto mmotm/master <topic base> topic

The directory http://www.ozlabs.org/~akpm/mmots/ (mm-of-the-second)
contains daily snapshots of the -mm tree. It is updated more frequently
than mmotm, and is untested.

A git copy of this tree is available at

	http://git.cmpxchg.org/cgit.cgi/linux-mmots.git/

and use of this tree is similar to
http://git.cmpxchg.org/cgit.cgi/linux-mmotm.git/, described above.

* linux-next: manual merge of the powerpc tree with the powerpc-fixes tree
From: Stephen Rothwell @ 2016-11-23 23:36 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Michael Ellerman, Benjamin Herrenschmidt, PowerPC
Cc: Naveen N. Rao, linux-next, linux-kernel, Nicholas Piggin

Hi all,

Today's linux-next merge of the powerpc tree got a conflict in:

  arch/powerpc/include/asm/asm-prototypes.h

between commit:

9e5f68842276 ("powerpc: Fix missing CRCs, add more asm-prototypes.h declarations")

from the powerpc-fixes tree and commit:

82de5797a260 ("powerpc: Remove extraneous header from asm-prototypes.h")

from the powerpc tree.

I fixed it up (see below) and can carry the fix as necessary. This
is now fixed as far as linux-next is concerned, but any non trivial
conflicts should be mentioned to your upstream maintainer when your tree
is submitted for merging. You may also want to consider cooperating
with the maintainer of the conflicting tree to minimise any particularly
complex conflicts.

Cheers,
Stephen Rothwell

Thanks. I'm planning to merge fixes into next RSN ... as soon as people
stop finding bugs.

Hi Paul,

Today's linux-next merge of the kvm-ppc-paulus tree got a conflict in:

  arch/powerpc/include/asm/asm-prototypes.h

between commit:

82de5797a260 ("powerpc: Remove extraneous header from asm-prototypes.h")

from the powerpc-fixes tree and commit:

ebe4535fbe7a ("KVM: PPC: Book3S HV: sparse: prototypes for functions called from assembler")

from the kvm-ppc-paulus tree.

Hi Paul,

Today's linux-next merge of the kvm-ppc-paulus tree got a conflict in:

  arch/powerpc/include/asm/reg.h

between commit:

29a969b76481 ("powerpc: Revert Load Monitor Register Support")

Hi Paul,

Today's linux-next merge of the kvm-ppc-paulus tree got a conflict in:

  arch/powerpc/mm/pgtable-radix.c

between commit:

555c16328ae6 ("powerpc/mm: Correct process and partition table max size")

I fixed it up (the latter removed the code modified by the former) and

upstream maintainer when your tree is submitted for merging. You may

Hi Andrew,

After merging the akpm-current tree, today's linux-next build (powerpc
ppc64_defconfig) failed like this:

powerpc-linux-ld: unrecognized option '--no-dynamic-linker'

Caused by patch

"powerpc: add purgatory for kexec_file_load implementation"

I have disabled KEXEC_FILE for now:

* linux-next: Tree for Nov 24
From: Stephen Rothwell @ 2016-11-24 5:35 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-next; +Cc: linux-kernel

Hi all,

Changes since 20161123:

Removed tree: remoteproc (no longer used)

The powerpc tree gained a conflict against the powerpc-fixes tree.

The kvm-ppc-paulus tree gained conflicts against the powerpc-fixes and
powerpc trees.

The staging tree gained a conflict against the net-next tree.

The akpm-current tree gained a build failure for which I disabled
CONFIG_KEXEC_FILE on powerpc.

Non-merge commits (relative to Linus' tree): 7885
 7978 files changed, 461386 insertions(+), 174925 deletions(-)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git
(patches at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/next/ ). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" and checkout or reset to the new
master.

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log
files in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built
with a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig (with
CONFIG_BUILD_DOCSRC=n) for x86_64, a multi_v7_defconfig for arm and a
native build of tools/perf. After the final fixups (if any), I do an
x86_64 modules_install followed by builds for x86_64 allnoconfig,
powerpc allnoconfig (32 and 64 bit), ppc44x_defconfig, allyesconfig
(with KALLSYMS_EXTRA_PASS=1) and pseries_le_defconfig and i386, sparc
and sparc64 defconfig.

Below is a summary of the state of the merge.

I am currently merging 243 trees (counting Linus' and 34 trees of bug
fix patches pending for the current merge release).

Stats about the size of the tree over time can be seen at
http://neuling.org/linux-next-size.html .

Status of my local build tests will be at
http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next . If maintainers want to give
advice about cross compilers/configs that work, we are always open to add
more builds.

Thanks to Randy Dunlap for doing many randconfig builds. And to Paul
Gortmaker for triage and bug fixes.

Sorry about that. --no-dynamic-linker was added in binutils 2.26.
The patch below fixes the problem.

The parisc allmodconfig started failing recently. An automated
bisect comes up with the following commit:

af3dcc1705ead3cbff4450a1b16c8b060c7ef69a is the first bad commit
commit af3dcc1705ead3cbff4450a1b16c8b060c7ef69a
Author: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de>
Date: Tue Nov 22 18:08:30 2016 +0100

parisc: Switch to generic sched_clock implementation

Drop the open-coded sched_clock() function and replace it by the provided
GENERIC_SCHED_CLOCK implementation. We have seen quite some hung
tasks in the
past, which seem to be fixed by this patch.

One of the PPC configs failed today. An automated bisect leads
to the following commit:

commit 1704a81ccebc69b5223220df97cde8a645271828
Author: Paul Mackerras <paulus@ozlabs.org>
Date: Fri Nov 18 08:47:08 2016 +1100

KVM: PPC: Book3S HV: Use msgsnd for IPIs to other cores on POWER9

On POWER9, the msgsnd instruction is able to send interrupts to
other cores, as well as other threads on the local core. Since
msgsnd is generally simpler and faster than sending an IPI via the
XICS, we use msgsnd for all IPIs sent by KVM on POWER9.

OK, I will apply that patch instead of disabling CONFIG_KEXEC_FILE

* linux-next: Tree for Nov 25
From: Stephen Rothwell @ 2016-11-25 3:15 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-next; +Cc: linux-kernel

Hi all,

Changes since 20161124:

The akpm-current tree still had its build failure for which I added a
CONFIG_KEXEC_FILE on powerpc.

Non-merge commits (relative to Linus' tree): 7973
 8042 files changed, 463502 insertions(+), 175899 deletions(-)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git
(patches at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/next/ ). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" and checkout or reset to the new
master.

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log
files in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built
with a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig (with
CONFIG_BUILD_DOCSRC=n) for x86_64, a multi_v7_defconfig for arm and a
native build of tools/perf.
