Good catch, I'll fix this up!

Just to check, is your copy of tip up-to-date?

That latter commit was in the tip smp/hotplug branch, but that branch
was reset to v4.12-rc1 a few days ago (before the first commit was sent
to Linus), specifically to avoid this conflict.

... did we miss another branch that was merged into, perhaps?

The good news is that the commit in Linus' tree is the correct fix. :)

The other commit was a slightly broken prior attempt, and shouldn't be
in the tip tree any more.

We tried, but evidently something went wrong. :/

* linux-next: Tree for May 22
From: Stephen Rothwell @ 2017-05-22 6:04 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Linux-Next Mailing List; +Cc: Linux Kernel Mailing List

Hi all,

Changes since 20170519:

The netfilter tree lost its build failure.

The net-next tree gained a build failure so I used the version from
next-20170519.

The selinux tree gained a conflict against Linus' tree and a build
failure for which I applied a fix patch.

The tip tree gained a conflict against Linus' tree.

Non-merge commits (relative to Linus' tree): 2000
 2292 files changed, 77464 insertions(+), 46252 deletions(-)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git
(patches at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/next/ ). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" and checkout or reset to the new
master.

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log
files in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built
with a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig (with
CONFIG_BUILD_DOCSRC=n) for x86_64, a multi_v7_defconfig for arm and a
native build of tools/perf. After the final fixups (if any), I do an
x86_64 modules_install followed by builds for x86_64 allnoconfig,
powerpc allnoconfig (32 and 64 bit), ppc44x_defconfig, allyesconfig
and pseries_le_defconfig and i386, sparc and sparc64 defconfig.

Below is a summary of the state of the merge.

I am currently merging 260 trees (counting Linus' and 40 trees of bug
fix patches pending for the current merge release).

Stats about the size of the tree over time can be seen at
http://neuling.org/linux-next-size.html .

Status of my local build tests will be at
http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next . If maintainers want to give
advice about cross compilers/configs that work, we are always open to add
more builds.

Thanks to Randy Dunlap for doing many randconfig builds. And to Paul
Gortmaker for triage and bug fixes.

Indeed. I added the architecture specific versions in patch

  http://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/765238/

defined in every file that also defines the last added such
option SCM_TIMESTAMPING_OPT_STATS. Apologies for
missing this earlier.

Does this need to be 0x4033 (or something)?

* linux-next: manual merge of the tip tree with Linus' tree
From: Stephen Rothwell @ 2017-05-22 3:27 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Thomas Gleixner, Ingo Molnar, H. Peter Anvin, Peter Zijlstra

Hi all,

Today's linux-next merge of the tip tree got a conflict in:

  arch/arm64/include/asm/cpufeature.h

between commit:

63a1e1c95e60 ("arm64/cpufeature: don't use mutex in bringup path")

from Linus' tree and commit:

  d54bb72551b9 ("arm64/cpufeature: Use static_branch_enable_cpuslocked()")

from the tip tree.

I have no idea what the correct resolution is here, so I have just gone
with the former for now (i.e. removed the
static_branch_enable_cpuslocked() call). This will probably need a
better (or even correct :-)) fix.

I fixed it up (see above) and can carry the fix as necessary. This
is now fixed as far as linux-next is concerned, but any non trivial
conflicts should be mentioned to your upstream maintainer when your tree
is submitted for merging. You may also want to consider cooperating
with the maintainer of the conflicting tree to minimise any particularly
complex conflicts.

I've just pushed the following, thanks for the report:

====================
net: Define SCM_TIMESTAMPING_PKTINFO on all architectures.

A definition was only provided for asm-generic/socket.h
using platforms, define it for the others as well

Hi Paul,

After merging the selinux tree, today's linux-next build (powerpc
ppc64_defconfig) failed like this:

drivers/infiniband/core/uverbs_cmd.c: In function 'create_qp':
drivers/infiniband/core/uverbs_cmd.c:1513:4: error: label 'err_destroy' used but not defined
    goto err_destroy;

89b54b4d09bd ("IB/core: Enforce PKey security on QPs")

interacting with commit

fd3c7904db6e ("IB/core: Change idr objects to use the new schema")

from Linus' tree.

I have applied the following merge fix patch for today:

Hi Paul,

Today's linux-next merge of the selinux tree got a conflict in:

Hi all,

After merging the net-next tree, today's linux-next build (powerpc
ppc64_defconfig) failed like this:

net/socket.c: In function 'put_ts_pktinfo':
net/socket.c:695:28: error: 'SCM_TIMESTAMPING_PKTINFO' undeclared (first use in this function)
  put_cmsg(msg, SOL_SOCKET, SCM_TIMESTAMPING_PKTINFO,
                            ^

Caused by commit

aad9c8c470f2 ("net: add new control message for incoming HW-timestamped packets")

This probably broke every architecture that has its own
arch/<arch>/include/uapi/asm/socket.h that does not include
include/uapi/asm-generic/socket.h :-(

I have used the net-next tree from next-20170519 for today.

Thank you Stephen,

Andy, you warned me about this and I had forgotten before I included it in next.

Would you like to drop this change, or drop the touchpad_store function?

The reason is that when you merge a signed tag, git squirrels away t
he signature into the merge commit, so that you can see and verify the
signage later (use "git log --show-signatures" to see the signatures
on the commits).

If you fast-forward, there isn't any new commit to add the signing data to.

> To do the fast forward, try "git merge <tag>^{}" ...

A slightly simpler syntax might be just "tag^0", but yes, the "^{}"
thing peels off any tags.

> (unfortunately

"--ff" is the default behavior, and means "allow fast forward", but
note that it is about "allowing", not "forcing".

You can use "--ff-only" to say that you will _only_ accept a
fast-forward, and git will error out if it needs to create a merge.

* linux-next: Tree for May 19
From: Stephen Rothwell @ 2017-05-19 5:03 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Linux-Next Mailing List; +Cc: Linux Kernel Mailing List

Hi all,

Changes since 20170518:

The netfilter tree still had its build failure for which I applied a
supplied fix patch.

The drm-intel tree gained a conflict against the drm tree.

Non-merge commits (relative to Linus' tree): 1926
 2098 files changed, 66645 insertions(+), 43483 deletions(-)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git
(patches at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/next/ ). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" and checkout or reset to the new
master.

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log
files in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built
with a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig (with
CONFIG_BUILD_DOCSRC=n) for x86_64, a multi_v7_defconfig for arm and a
native build of tools/perf.

Cheers,
Stephen Rothwell

* linux-next: build warning after merge of the akpm-current tree
From: Stephen Rothwell @ 2017-05-19 4:44 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: Andrew Morton
Cc: Linux-Next Mailing List, Linux Kernel Mailing List, Michal Hocko

Hi Andrew,

After merging the akpm-current tree, today's linux-next build (arm
multi_v7_defconfig) produced this warning:

mm/vmstat.c: In function 'pagetypeinfo_showblockcount_print':
mm/vmstat.c:1230:8: warning: 'page' may be used uninitialized in this function [-Wmaybe-uninitialized]
   if (!memmap_valid_within(pfn, page, zone))
        ^

Introduced by commit

36c7473b3c85 ("mm, vmstat: skip reporting offline pages in pagetypeinfo")

That really doesn't look good.

* linux-next: manual merge of the drm-intel tree with the drm tree
From: Stephen Rothwell @ 2017-05-19 2:04 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Daniel Vetter, Intel Graphics, DRI, Dave Airlie
Cc: Linux-Next Mailing List, Linux Kernel Mailing List,
Pandiyan Dhinakaran, Maarten Lankhorst, Jani Nikula

Hi all,

Today's linux-next merge of the drm-intel tree got a conflict in:

  drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_dp_mst.c

between commit:

f424f55e3177 ("drm/i915: Track MST link bandwidth")

from the drm tree and commit:

3d65a735d834 ("drm/i915/mst: use max link not sink lane count")

from the drm-intel tree.

I fixed it up (see below) and can carry the fix as necessary. This
is now fixed as far as linux-next is concerned, but any non trivial
conflicts should be mentioned to your upstream maintainer when your tree
is submitted for merging. You may also want to consider cooperating
with the maintainer of the conflicting tree to minimise any particularly
complex conflicts.

* git merges of tags
From: Stephen Rothwell @ 2017-05-18 23:23 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: LKML; +Cc: Linux-Next Mailing List, Linus Torvalds, Git Mailing list

Hi all,

Just a reminder that if you are merging Linus' tree (or any tree
really) via a tag, git was changed some time ago so that merging a tag
will not do a fast forward (there is a good reason for this - I just
can't recall it ATM). This is a problem when your current head of
branch has been merged into (e.g.) Linus' tree and then you do "git
merge <tag>" on a tag that is later than the merge point. You end up
with an unnecessary merge commit rather than just fast forwarding.

To do the fast forward, try "git merge <tag>^{}" ... (unfortunately
doing "git merge --ff <tag>" also does not do a fast forward - it also
doesn't fail, it unexpectedly just creates a merge commit :-().
