Bugs not withstanding, it does seem to work. We have this in the linker
script already for a while:

  /* temporary hack until binutils is fixed to not emit these
     for static binaries */
  /DISCARD/ : {
    *(.dynsym)
    *(.dynstr)
    *(.dynamic)
    *(.hash)
  }
