* [PATCH v2 2/6] phy: realtek: usb2: introduce read and write functions to driver data

RTL9607C is a big endian SoC but has little endian USB host controller and
thus, reads and writes to the reg_gusb2phyacc0 should go through
le32_to_cpu and cpu_to_le32 functions respectively. This doesn't apply to
vstatus register though.

To handle this situation, introduce read and write functions to the driver
data and create 2 variations of reads and write function with le32 function
in it and without.

Adjust all instances of utmi_wait_register function to now include the read
function as one of its arguments.

Assign the existing phy configuration for RTD SoCs to the default phy_read
and phy_write functions.

In RTL9607C SoC, the vstatus register is located at a certain offset from
the base and so introduce the vstatus_offset to handle it.

Busy bit of the vstatus and new_reg_req bit are also different and so
introduce these variables to the driver data as well.

Add these variables to the pre-existing phy cfg structs for RTD SoCs and
assign them the default values.

This patch series for Realtek USB2 PHY driver adds support for RTL9607C
USB2 PHY.

RTL9607C is a big endian MIPS CPU which is quite far from RTD series SoCs
supported by realtek usb2 phy driver, but the phy initilization is found
to be very indentical in most areas.

Most of the code was based on the Realtek's usb driver from the GPL tarball
in [1] and adjusted to fit into the realtek usb2 phy driver code format.

The patch series was split into smaller patches that add/change something
in the driver that are not exactly related to RTL9607C and that also
helps for easier review. That also means, patch 5 depends on all the prior
patches that come before it.

This is plain wrong, DT definition is different from software implementation, you can do whatever you want if you describe HW accurately.

The CSIPHYs are not tied to a single "consumer" block, they can be connected to different consumers at runtime, which is not something classic PHY devices are designed for. So they are de facto a media element in the dynamic camera pipeline.

This doesn’t properly describe the data path, we got out of this classic scheme when implementing the whole USB-C complex on qualcomm SoCs where we had to describe the data flow within all the USB/DSP/DP/PHYs elements, and we have a link between the DP controller and the Combo PHY acting as a DRM bridge.
And actually Rob Herring asked use to define the complete data flow, it was a strong requirement. I don't see why we wouldn't here.

Looking at other vendors and sticking to this is wrong, we need to solve how to describe the Qualcomm CAMSS complex with accurate representation of the data flow and hw components interconnections. The choice of kernel API to access an HW element is irrelevant in the discussion.

Starting refactoring the DT representation of CAMSS is good, starting with PHY is weird since I don't see what it does solve we can't solve already,
but you need to take in account how the CSIPHYs are connected to other HW blocks. Simply adding a "phys =" reference from CAMSS node doesn't reflect
at all which HW element will consume the PHY, and what are the link parameters between the consumer and the PHY and between the PHY and the Sensor.
Those are the whole meaning of the port/endpoint links, where we can define multiple endpoints for a same connection to, for example, define multiple sensors on a same PHY for the split-mode.

Yeah that's a fair question.

The standard model is to pass the mode via binding right now. You 
_could_ configure it @ run time in principle.

And you could even conceive of a sensor hardware that might find value 
in that - but IMO it's a 100% hypothetical use-case - you'd basically 
need an FPGA that could output CPHY, DPHY or for some reason SPLIT_MODE 
DPHY.

But that's a pretty off the wall use-case to hypothesize. Split-mode 
OTOH is a board-level physical reality which => a DT description not a 
runtime choice.

To be frankly honest you can make an argument for it either way. However 
my honestly held position is analysing other upstream implementations 
connecting to the PHY means we can't make the PHY device a drivers/phy 
device - it would have to be a V4L2 device and then for me the question

The model we have right now, right or wrong is sensor endpoint to

I don't see this patch upstream yet.  It's a fix for 960609b22be5
("arm64: dts: qcom: hamoa: Move PHY, PERST, and Wake GPIOs to PCIe
port nodes and add port Nodes for all PCIe ports"), which looks like
it was merged by Bjorn A., so I assume the fix will go the same route?

Just want to make sure it's not waiting on me :)

Yes, I think it probably would need to. I don't know how likely it is,
but I think the purpose of this is to protect against the ID notifier
firing quickly in succession. Although, given that this runs on a work
queue and work queue instances are non-reentrant to my knowledge, I
don't think we need the mutex here after all.

Given the above, I think it's fine. Maybe the commit message doesn't
give a correct reason for why we don't need the mutex, but the resulting
code looks like it should be fine regardless.

Understood. Thanks for testing.

I'm still not satisfied with this level of complexity. If I get you
right, ufs_qcom_phy_power_off() is still needed because phy_calibrate()
expects a "fresh after power on" state, otherwise it fails? That would
be the second reason, apart from the first one I already identified
(undo a phy_power_on() done prior to phy_init()).

If so, could you please test the 3 patches attached (no relationship
with anything else we've exchanged thus far)?

Currently, phy_set_mode_ext() on the QMP UFS PHY expects the PHY to be
powered down, and it makes no change to the hardware state, instead
phy_power_on() followed by phy_calibrate() must be run afterwards.

"Order of API calls" from Documentation/driver-api/phy/phy.rst has a
roundabout and not really clear way of saying that both calling
sequences should be supported. This was further discussed here,

By absorbing the phy_power_off() -> ... -> phy_power_on() ->

other calls to do its job.

The Qualcomm UFS host controller driver violates the Generic PHY API
expectation, documented in section "Order of API calls" from
Documentation/driver-api/phy/phy.rst, and then tries to hide it.

The expectation is that calls must be made in the phy_init() ->
phy_power_on() -> phy_power_off() -> phy_exit() sequence.

What we actually have is:

This "works" because the way that the "phy_power_on was called before
phy_init\n" condition is detected in phy-core.c is if the power_count is
positive at the phy_init() call time.

By having that "if (phy->power_count) phy_power_off(phy)" logic, the
ufs-qcom.c technically sidesteps the test, but actually violates the
Generic PHY API even more (calls phy_power_on() *and* phy_power_off()
before phy_init()).

The reason why I stumbled upon this was that I was trying to remove
dereferences of phy->power_count from drivers. This is a PHY-internal
field, and using it from drivers is highly likely to be incorrect, as
this case showcases rather well.

As commit 77d2fa54a945 ("scsi: ufs: qcom : Refactor phy_power_on/off
calls") shows, this driver tries to couple the PHY power state with the
HBA clocks, for power saving reasons. I won't try to change that, I will
just move the phy_init() call earlier, to ufs_qcom_init().

After the phy_init() movement, ufs_qcom_power_up_sequence() should no
longer need to do either phy_init() nor the conditional phy_power_off().
However, phy_power_off() is still needed, for a separate reason which
will be dealt with separately.

Because almost all CAMSS components may be muxed around (at runtime), I
believe the endgame is to have a central place storing references to all
of them (which would end up as "the camss driver") and managing the
actual connections (turning on the respective PHYs, programming routing registers
etc.), based on incoming v4l2 requests

For older targets without that configurability, the same logic could be used,
except with predefined boundaries

Actually perhaps just phy_configure_opts, because phy_mode could be left
as "MIPI_CSI" to reduce complexity (while still carrying info about D/C
mode in the latter)

If the register contents are generally similar but the bit positions
and/or reg offsets differ, regmap_fields may be useful

Does the _PHY_ DT node need to be aware about this upfront?

If we have some sideband signal (e.g. the sensor driver specifically
requesting C-PHY mode), we can simply throw all this complexity into
phy_mode + phy_configure_opts, all at runtime

Further, the combo/split mode may possibly be selected through
aggregation of requests.

The question remains whether the sensor should have a direct connection to
the PHY itself (i.e. phys = <&csiphyN> or of_graph straight into the PHY)
or whether it's going to be translated by the camss node (which would be
the one holding a PHY reference) - there's probably surface for adding such
negotiation logic in both places


Note this is a question and I'm not aware of all the possible combinations

I tested the patch. But it fails ufs_qcom_power_up_sequence() if PHY was already
powered on:

[   31.565273] ufshcd-qcom 1d84000.ufshc: Enabling the controller failed

Funny thing is, it didn't affect the functionality since the UFS core retries
ufshcd_hba_enable() and in the error path of ufs_qcom_power_up_sequence(),
phy_power_off() gets called and that causes the next try to succeed. So it is
evident that, if PHY was already powered ON, it should be powered off before
ufs_qcom_phy_power_on(). And due to the UFS driver design,
ufs_qcom_power_up_sequence() can get called multiple times. So we cannot just
remove phy_power_off().

Below diff on top of your patch fixes the issue:

If we use PHY_TYPE_DPHY

include/dt-bindings/phy/phy.h:#define PHY_TYPE_DPHY		10

We _must_ then add SPLIT_MODE to phy.h if/when we implement that 
support. Which means successfully arguing the toss of weather SPLIT_MODE 
is a Qualcommism - a vendor specific mode or not.

<&phy PHY_TYPE_DPHY> committed to an upstream dts will then need to be 
supported perpetually.

So for example qrb5615 - kona/rb5 support split mode.

Pretend go with <&phy PHY_TYPE_DPHY>; and retrofit individual PHY 
support to this platform.

Grand so far.

The pretend we want to switch from one sensor to a split-mode sensor on 
the existing mezzanine.

Then we need a representation of split mode in phy.h to represent that 
in DT.

<&phy PHY_TYPE_DPHY_SPLIT_MODE>;

Except split-mode is not an appropriate mode to define in phy.h since it 
is vendor specific - even if a few vendors support it, its not a generic 
PHY mode.

Hence we would have an enormously difficult time justifying adding that 
mode to phy.h and rightly so.

OTOH

- SPLIT_MODE will certainly require _both_ separate init sequences
   and specific logical disjunction for additional configuration steps
   lane-assignment and masking, etc.

- That phy.h isn't the right location for SPLIT_MODE as its vendor
   specific. Just look at the modes we have for the USB PHYs
   same logic => include/dt-bindings/phy/phy-qcom-qmp.h same
   raison d'être

- And that specifying PHY_TYPE_DPHY now binds us into an ABI that we
   cannot subsequently change - it will not be possible to introduce
   include/dt-bindings/phy/phy-qcom-mipi-csi2.h later on with our mode

So therefore include/dt-bindings/phy/phy-qcom-mipi-csi2.h + PHY modes is 
the logical outcome.

Add support for the usb2 phy of RTL9607C series based SoCs.
Add the macros and phy config struct for rtl9607.

RTL9607C requires to clear a "force host disconnect" bit in the
specific register (which is at an offset from reg_wrap_vstatus)
before proceeding with phy parameter writes.

Add the bool variable to the driver data struct and hide this whole
procedure under the if statement that checks this new variable.

In RTL9607C, there is so called "IP Enable Controller" which resemble
reset controller with reset lines and is used for various things like
USB, PCIE, GMAC and such.

Introduce the reset_control struct to this driver to handle deasserting
usb2 phy reset line.

Make use of the function devm_reset_control_array_get_optional_exclusive()
function to get the reset controller and since existing RTD SoCs don't
specify the resets we can have a cleaner code.

Add the "realtek,rtl9607-usb2phy" compatible for USB2 PHY on the RTL9607C
SoC series.

Add a resets property to properties to describe the usb2phy reset line.

In RTL9607C, USB2 PHY reset line is from "IP Enable controller" which is
multipurpose and handle activating various SoC peripherals.

It is unclear whether RTD SoCs have something similar to that but make it
available to them anyway.

RTL9607C requires the "resets" to be specified so add the corresponding
if check for the "realtek,rtl9607-usb2phy" compatible.
