I'd like to conduct a Linux Power Management Summit
during the two days preceeding the Ottawa Linux Symposium:

Monday June 25
Tuesday June 26

Hopefully the session can benefit from some of the lessons learned
by the Storage Summit folks -- according to James they include:

1. round-table format -- discussion oriented, limited presentations.
2. limit to ~20 attendees to support discussion format
3. prepare agenda and topic list by consensus via e-mail ahead of time.

Please let me know what you think should be on the agenda,
and if you are motivated to show up for the discussion.

thanks,
-Len

I'd like to be there, but I am not going to OLS this year. Could we
perhaps do PM summit near kernel summit -- that's september in
england.

For those of us who will be at Ottawa, but might not make it early, it would
be great if somebody could present a summary of the discussions during the PM
BOF at OLS.

The meeting in Ottawa is on.

We can also meet in Cambridge in September.

In both cases there will be folks who are unable to attend,
and so the discussion will be colored by those who can.

Here are a few things that have been tossed around for a while on
linux-pm and CELF that should be discussed:

1. Unified interface to dynamic/runtime PM for laptop/server and
embedded platforms - Does it make sense?
2. Enhancements to Linux driver model to handle dynamic PM
3. Where should policy be located? Drivers or userspace or a mix of both?
4. Interfaces to userspace policy manager
5. Can x86 device drivers and bus drivers do more runtime PM? Similar
to some of the USB work being carried on by Alan/David.
6. What can be done to ensure Suspend To RAM _always_ works? Video
drivers are the big problem now, anything else?
7. Using wakeup latency as a parameter to decide how deep we want to sleep

As someone pointed out, it would be nice to see the results of this at
the PM BOF or even covered by LWN.

Regards,
Amit

<<Reprising off-list response, at Len's request>>

Hi, Len,

I would like to attend a PM summit preceding OLS. I thought the one
held last year conveyed a good amount of useful information among the
participants, though there was a dissipation of consensus after the
meeting ended. I hope this year might lead to more concrete results.

I would like to see some attention to APIs to support power-aware
applications, latency awareness in frequency management, and other areas
of embedded interest.

thanks,
scott

Hi Len,

Matt and I would like to attend the PM summit. Our primary interest is unified
cross platforms pm API to control pm hardware (covering both x86 and embedded),
constraints (including latencies) engine, pm subsystem/drivers interface, API
for use case driven pm.

Thanks,
Eugeny

Hi,

Kenneth and I would like to attend. We are interested in cross
platform (PowerPC, x86) power management, pm controls and policies,
pm based scheduling, pm in presence of hypervisors, and power scaled
cpu utilization statistics.

Below is our proposed topics to the agenda. We could also give a short
presentation about latest developments in Nokia N800 power management
area.

BTW, we in this context mean people involved in Nokia Internet Tablet
power management development (Igor, Klaus and myself).

- Presentation of DVFS in Nokia N800 including
  - integration with clock framework and needed enhancements
  - role of the voltage and other frameworks

- Future power management challenges in Nokia Internet Tablets
  - next omap and new requirements
  - power aware applications and policies
  - pm interface between kernel and pm aware applications

- Current budgeting in embedded USB host
  - how to balance the current flow from battery to usb peripheral

- How to use the clk fw to express constraints
  - between clocks
  - between clocks and voltages

- How to address power domains with timeouts
  - simple bitfields management example

Hi Len

I would like to attend the PM summit. My primary interest
would be on Power manager policy and frame work that need to support it
, Specifically how realistic and how much intelligence we need to/can
have on PM, what the frame work we need to support finer Platform level
PM .

Thanks,
Hari
