PPS: The i386 kernel won't help anyway.

On another machine with 32bit kernel:

# cat /sys/power/state
# echo mem > /sys/power/state
-su: echo: write error: No such device
# uname -a
Linux stein 2.6.22-rc1 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun May 13 19:50:17 CEST 2007 i686
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

That's a PC with 945GM based MSI microATX motherboard.
