Maybe linux-pm is the more appropriate list for this question:

PS: It's an Apple Mac mini with Bootcamp. I'd like to get suspend (to
RAM) working for driver testing, but I won't switch to an i386 kernel.

PPS: The i386 kernel won't help anyway.

On another machine with 32bit kernel:

# cat /sys/power/state
# echo mem > /sys/power/state
-su: echo: write error: No such device
# uname -a
Linux stein 2.6.22-rc1 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun May 13 19:50:17 CEST 2007 i686
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU         T7200  @ 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

That's a PC with 945GM based MSI microATX motherboard.

No doubt other people will be able to give better answers than I. However
an important first step is to provide the dmesg log showing what happened
when the attempted suspend failed.

I rebuilt the kernel with PM_DEBUG.
There is nothing in dmesg after echo mem > /sys/power/state.
This is also true if I first unload all modular drivers.

Dmesg and .config attached.

Apparently kernel/power/main.c:valid_state() on your boxes always returns 0.

Can you please try to set CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND and see if that helps?

I will do so.  BTW,

config SOFTWARE_SUSPEND
	bool "Software Suspend (Hibernation)"
	depends on PM && SWAP && (((X86 || PPC64_SWSUSP) && (!SMP ||
			SUSPEND_SMP)) || ((FRV || PPC32) && !SMP))

and

config SUSPEND_SMP
	bool
	depends on HOTPLUG_CPU && (X86 || PPC64) && PM

So, no HOTPLUG_CPU -> no SOFTWARE_SUSPEND.  I don't expect a
single-processor, dual-core PC to require CPU hotplugging support.

As a first step, I enabled HOTPLUG_CPU and SUSPEND_SMP, i.e. did not
enable SOFTWARE_SUSPEND yet.

# cat /sys/power/state
mem
# echo m >/sys/power/state
PC goes to sleep.

Thanks so far.

(Alas it doesn't wake up anymore. But that's another issue for another
day. I had all drivers loaded when I did this.)

We use the CPU hotplug code for disabling/enabling nonboot CPUs.

You need to enable it to be able to suspend (BTW, it's also necesary for
the suspend to RAM).

Rafael

I now noticed that this is documented in the help text of i386's
Kconfig. But it is not mentioned in the help text of x86_64's Kconfig.
Also, I think that should already be shown in the prompt, not just in
the help text.

Since I agree with the changes in your patch, I think I'll just send it to
Andrew (unless you prefer to send it yourself).

Greetings,
Rafael

Would be nice if you take care of it.
