I've been hunting around on adaptec's web site, but I haven't found it.
Is there a raidutil package (Storage Manager) that supports the 2200S?
I'd like to be able to manage the arrays and query for drive information
without taking the system down.

The 2200S comes with both a command line and GUI app for managing
the card under Linux. It should be on the CD that came with the card.

I'll have to see if I can get someone to put that CD in. The server in
question is >100 miles away and was setup remotely. Is there a reason the
software isn't online?...or did I just fail to find it?

BTW...as long as someone from Adaptec is here, I have to say I was
somewhat horrified when during installation of
aacraid-drv_1.1.4.2323-rh9.rpm (hoping there was a copy of Storage Manager
in one of the tar files inside it) the following ran:

 postinstall scriptlet (using /bin/sh):
 cd /opt/Adaptec/aacraid.rh9
 sh ./install.sh

which appears to have removed the Red Hat kernel RPM provided aacraid
module for several of the installed kernel rpms, installed its own, and
updated initrd files, all without asking/warning. Fortunately, it didn't
have a module for the latest/current kernel, so it didn't mess with the
module actually in use.

Try this:

http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.html?sess=no&language=English+US&cat=/Product/AAR-2810SA&filekey=asmbe_linux_v1.23.006.tgz

This is from the 2810SA download page, but should work fine for the
2200S. I'm not sure why the apps packages are not posted for linux
in the 2200S section.

I'll pass this along to the person who is responsible for the aacraid
RPMs. I believe that the script is supposed to leave around a backup
of the old modules and initrds. Did it not in this case?

Same Storage Manager for the SATA and u320 cards? They want me to fill
out a form to download that, and I'm afraid to try it tonight anyway.
I'll have someone put the CD in when there are sufficiently clued hands
available onsite.

I just took another look, and actually what it did was much worse. It
looks at grub.conf and then rm's modules from /lib/modules for all kernels
mentioned in grub.conf and then installs its own (if it has one). This
left me with:

# rpm -V kernel-smp-2.4.20-30.9
.M...... /dev/shm
missing /lib/modules/2.4.20-30.9smp/kernel/drivers/scsi/aacraid
missing /lib/modules/2.4.20-30.9smp/kernel/drivers/scsi/aacraid/aacraid.o

and no aacraid module anywhere in /lib/modules/2.4.20-30.9smp/.

Fortunately, it didn't blow away the 2.4.20-30.9smp initrd, so I was able
to extract the missing module from that, and put it back in place. I know
the system would have booted just fine (since the module was in the
initrd)...but man, that's _really_annoying_ behavior for an RPM. I
haven't bothered reading the whole script (25kb), but AFAICT, it rm'd the
modules and did not leave backup copies of them anywhere I've looked.

<shameless plug>
FWIW, this is *exactly* the reason DKMS exists - because every vendor
who offers a driver update does it a little differently. DKMS is
designed to standardize this, and make it really obvious when a given
driver has been updated, and to what version, for each kernel.

Any suggestions on the best dual ata 100 or 133 controller to use for
creating a software raid under the 2.6 kernel?

i currently have a raid 1 of two 30 gig harddrives on a highpoint
rocket 133 (with the hpt302.o proprietary driver), but that doesn't
look like it's gonna make the upgrade to kernel 2.6 (not supported in
the kernel, and the hpt drivers are compiled against a 2.4 kernel)

i'm leaning towards the promise ultra133 or ultra100, any better ideas?

Yes, the backup copy of the initrd is still around, but admittedly the
original aacraid.o modules in the /lib/modules tree are blown away. We
can address this perhaps, by backing up the modules and adding in an
uninstall.sh script to the rpm.

There was much consternation over the rpm's install.sh script. It has to
please too many people.

	rpm --noscripts

-or-

	rpm2cpio

were viewed as the technologically paranoid's way of getting around
this. For the OEMS, technical support, neophytes and those hoping for
plug-n-play, we were requested to make sure all the drivers on the
system were synchronized and up-to-date. This includes *ghasp* a
requirement to also update any trees we find in /lib/modules *even* if
they are not referenced in the boot (grub or lilo) configurations.

Yes, this is functionally similar to a statement `Adaptec knows what is
best for you'. For that I apologize, but you do have a means around all
of this should you feel uncomfortable.

Sincerely -- Mark Salyzyn
