I'm happy to report that I've been able to rebuild the disk array
and that the file-system integrity checker now reports that the data is
okay. I have restarted the license managers for our proprietary math
software and checked that all three programs (MATLAB, Maple, and
Mathematica) start up and shut down correctly.

Having skirted catastrophe, I wish to express my appreciation to
the maintainers of the software that manage our RAID ("redundant array of
inexpensive drives") system -- they are the last of the addressees
above. The principal maintainer is Neil Brown of the Computing Support
Group in the School of Computer Science and Engineering of the University
of New South Wales. Thanks a bunch!
