Supporting this sort of usage seemed like a good idea long long ago, but

I think it is an mdadm bug. I don't see a mention of mdadm version number
(but I didn't look very hard).
If you are using 3.3, update to at least 3.3.1
(just
cd /tmp
git clone git://neil.brown.name/mdadm
cd mdadm
make
./mdadm --assemble --force /dev/md127 .....
)
