Hi!
Is there a tool to force the kernel to try auto-detecting RAID? I think I
saw that SuSE has something like that implemented, so they can use it in
initrd...
Thanks, D.

OK, just found out that SuSE is adding it in their build. Is there a
reason why this is not in the 'normal' raidtools sources (yet)?
Thanks, D.

Danci,
You can set a RAID to autostart by setting its partition id to 0xfd
(RAID autostart) with the fdisk utility. You could also use an initrd
to scan the configuration file and start the RAID arrays.
The second is what most distributions do such as RedHat.
Thanks

I know that, it's what I do for last three years. But recently, I've
been trying to use modular kernels with SCSI drivers as modules.
As the inital kernel raid autodetection happens BEFORE initrd loads the
SCSI drivers, it won't work.

Found out that SuSE has another way - they add a 'raidautorun' utility to
raidtools, which forces the kernel to re-autodetect raid stuff. It can be
used in a initrd, AFTER loading the SCSI driver.
With this, it's probably even possible to have RAID compiled as modules.
Thanks, D.

You have to build your own initrd which loads the correct modules. I
thought SuSE has its own procedures to do it. I thought you have to add
the modules somewhere in /etc/rc.config and run mkinitrd. Just check the
documentation.

I know and I'm NOT using SuSE.
I just noted a 'new' command that SuSE had while the normal, plain
raidtools from Mingo had none. So I implemented the 'new' command
(raidautorun) in my distro and now it's all OK.

Hello,
I want to find that anyone made a successful work for the HOT-SWAP
on the IDE master/slave.
Ther are many systems that use the IDE for RAID. However, I heard most of
them
use the MASTER.
Is it really impossible to make use of both master and slave?
I mean "Are there any sucess story to use the slave?".
Thanks in advance,
Bo

To: bmoon, linux-raid
you don't want more than one disk per channel. it fscks up the performance big
time. I'm aware of that 3ware's controllers are supposed to support hot swap,
but they do not support more than one disk per channel. But then - their
controllers have 4, 8 and 12 ports, so you don't need two drives per channel
anyway
