Western Digital RE3

[MOgWai46[Saurceful of Secrets]]

Hi!

I would replace two Western Digital Velociraptor 300 GB 10K Rpm that
in the latest five month gave me a lot problems. Periodically i must
re-sync the linux raid 1 array because one of the two Velociraptor
stop to work. Someone have an experience with the Western Digital Raid
Edition 3 on a machine with linux software Raid 1?

I have been using pairs of md RAID1 RE3's in a number of machines for 
the last 6 months without issue.

I have also been using a pair of 1TB RE3's in RAID 1 configuration on Ubuntu 8.10 since January and have not received a single complaint in the logs.  I have used consumer level western digital drives (external firewire) and had lots of issues with them, due to them going into sleep mode all the time.  This may have been due to them being external drives though.

I'm told that my script to keep "FreeAgent" USB external drives from 
doing that also works with similar other drives which want to sleep. I 
have *not* verified that (having none and no time), but if you want the 
script to try on your own, I think I posted it here, or could put it up 
on request.

That would be great!  I would definitely like to have a script that keeps drives alive.  Can you send it privately (keep the list archive smaller) or put it on the net?

This is the version I posted, I've played with some extra features, but 
since you may want to modify it, simple is best. It's small enough to 
just send.

Just to be clear, this script addresses the habit of external drives to 
go to sleep, not any other problems you may have.

I have one in a raid1 with a seagate ES.2, works flawlessly, though its
only been running for a month or two.

i do however also have great success with WD RE2-GP and WD10EADS.

Do inspect the drive and drive logs with WD diagnostic software.

Do inspect the hardware... cables, connectors etc....

Is it always the same disk that is triggering an error?
Is the drive firmware up to date?

Software RAID 1 does not place any strange load on a drive the way
other RAID models might so unless the drive is well out of warranty 
look for the obvious....

He is not the first person to have serious problems with the
velociraptors, so they are probably not too good to use for raid.

Is it possible that it has something to do with timeouts?  I have a couple of velociraptors in raid 1, and other then a couple of drive timeouts I haven't had any serious issues.  Perhaps he can try running WDTLER utility on the drive?  (I believe its on the wd tools ISO)
