Could be related to the name. Try assembling it as /dev/md0.
If that works, change the name to something that isn't md<number>.
(--assemble --update=name --name=xyz I guess)

This is a personal preference... but you should run self tests
more regularly (automated, smartd) to detect HDD errors in time.

That's quite a lot of reallocated sectors already.
This is the kind of drive that will make your rebuilds fail.
I would consider replacing such a drive / putting it to some use
where data loss is acceptable.

Thanks, that looks like it did the trick. Yes, I was already aware
that sdc needs to be replaced at some point, just not during my OS
upgrade.
root@jowahome:~# mdadm --assemble --update=name --name=md0 /dev/md0
/dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1
mdadm: /dev/md0 has been started with 2 drives.

While I hadn't seen that section on the Wiki, it's certainly something
that I'll be using to decide my next purchase after fully reading the
links that are provided there.

Just a quick response - just noticed it and I'm heading out - but.
Seagate Barracuda. You have read the section on the wiki about Timeout
Mismatch, I take it? These drives do NOT support ERC.
Cheers,

I keep on intending to add a page for the smartctl information sections
from various drives, just haven't got round to it ...
There seem to be three main classes of raid drives out there, WD Reds,
Seagate NASs, and Toshiba N300 raid drives. Everybody seems to buy
Reds, I've only recently seen NASs, and the N300s come with 4TB the
smallest drive. They all seem to cost about 50% more than the basic
desktop drives, but that's still amazingly cheap ...
Cheers,
Wol

And higher-end drives too: e.g. Seagate Constellations and the like.

I'm just thinking back to my first disk drive. I paid £200 for a WD
bigfoot. It was a 5400rpm 5 1/4 drive - marketed as "cheapest cost per
MB available". And how big was it? Just *six* *giga*bytes, I think my
current pair of 3TB drives cost me less than that - 3 orders of
magnitude more storage, for less money.
Cheers,
Wol
