I'm curious, any plans for an rt patch for current kernels? Anything in
the works? 2.6.33.x is getting to be really old... the question keeps
popping up but I have heard nothing from the rt gurus...

Glad to hear that, I can't use 2.6.33-rt anymore because of problems
with my intel video card and my band is starting to blame because of xruns.

In the meantime, the -bfs kernel does improve the situation somewhat.

i know what happens at my end. - i can use 2.6.36 for RT type tasks,
as i set that kernel up 2 days ago.
im still holding onto 2.6.35 though, as it is my best kernel, has my
Wacom running, and rgba.
So far though, 2.6.36 seems not too much different from 2.6.35 for my
pro-audio usage.
I may wait for 2.6.37-bfs before i re-install Wacom, rgba, etc.
(or PREEMPT_RT, once i actually here of a patch being available, i hope soonish)
BFS is good enough for now though.

I just compiled 2.6.36-bfs, but unfortunately alsa git does not compile
against it (I need alsa git because of M-Audio Fast Track Ultra support).

"Can't use it anymore" sounds weird. Is that related to some userspace
f.i. xorg update?
Did you try the 'i915.modeset=1' boot option with 2.6.33.7-rt29?
Said kernel works just fine here with both Intel and NVidia video cards
on debian/testing+sid.
best,
robin

Don't worry. It's not worth the hype it generated. I'm just back from
rolling a new kernel for 64studio. I tried a couple of candidates
including -bfs.
2.6.33.7-rt29 is _by far_ the best option for low-latency audio.
Well, actually it's the only option (not counting older rt-linux
releases) which provides reliable <=4 ms latency (16 or 32 audio-frames
per period) without any x-runs!
Vanilla 2.6.36 and -bfs kernel both perform quite well. If >=15 ms
latency is sufficient for your use-case and you can live with some
occasional x-run that is.
I'm looking forward to a new -rt patch.
Cheers!
robin
PS. Note that sound latency here is not calculated (eg. 32*2/48kHz) but
measured with jack_delay from http://www.kokkinizita.net/linuxaudio/

It's because the Intel KMS driver sucks hard, *VERY* hard.
Because of this:
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27169
And this:
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30352
And this:
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=26664
And this:
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27168
...and I can continue, but I think you get the point :-)
Intel driver is *SHIT*.

I agree: I patched alsa git to make it compile but I didn't notice any
major improvement with -bfs :-(
I hope the next -rt kernel will be released soon, otherwise I fear I
will crash my laptop next time I hear "what about buying a Mac?" .-.
