aic7xxx, HP-dat i/o error

hi all. I have a problem with a tape drive (hp dat24i, model C1537A) 
connected to an Adaptec 2930U SCSI card installed in a SuSE7.2 (2.4.4-4GB 
kernel) on a pc-intel box. The drive used to work until some days ago, when 
it got blocked, not allowing to load the aic7xxx. After powering it off and 
on again it loads the module, but any operation involving read or write 
results in an I/O error of this kind:

I'm not familiar with SCSI devices, so I don't even know which kind of error 
should I look for, or at which level. I'd appreciate any suggestions.
