Pierre,
Can you capture the complete panic message using serial console or
netconsole? or at least use a smaller font on the console so that
we can see the entire panic message, as some critical parts of it
have scrolled off the top of the screen.

I upgraded a machine from 2.6.11.7 to 2.6.12.2 today and the only thanks
I got was a brand new kernel panic. From the backtrace it seems that the
dc395x driver is the culprit. From what I can tell it hasn't undergone
any changes between the two versions.

3c59x.c has CONFIG_NET_POLL_CONTROLLER code in it.
I would expect it to work since it's a fairly common NIC, but I
can't vouch for it.
Did you enable CONFIG_NETPOLL in your kernel .config?

Shouldn't be needed. It's for trapping incoming packets, not
outbound.

I've tried to get it running on three separate machines now with no
success (each running a different kernel version), so I'm starting to
suspect I'm doing something wrong here. I've used the following line to
load the module:
modprobe netconsole netconsole=@/,@10.8.0.168/
I've tried changing the ip-address to both broadcast and specific hosts
with the same result. I also tried giving all parameters using:
modprobe netconsole
netconsole=2000@10.8.0.24/eth0,3000@10.8.0.168/00:0e:35:15:32:d6
but the result was the same.
Anything else I might be doing wrong?

netconsole seems to be working:

Are you using netcat on the receive side?
Matt Mackall says that a common problem is running kernels with
a log low level:
Kernel command line: ro root=LABEL=/ rhgb quiet acpi=ht
so remove the "quiet" option there, or change it to "debug".

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the scope of netconsole. Is it supposed to
send out everything I can see with 'dmesg' or just panics?

Have you managed to get netconsole running? Do you have no chance at all
to use a serial console? You are, perhaps, the only / last user of dc395x
on a high-mem machine, the driver is known to have a problem there,
although from your dump I cannot see yet if that is indeed the problem. As
someone also already suggested, you could also just try to reduce your
terminal font size to fit the entire Oops on the monitor. I've tried to
make a patche for the high-mem problem of dc395x, but we didn't have any
testers. So, would be nice if you could help.

try changing the font size when I get access to the machine again (this
weekend).
As far as I know the machine is not a high-mem machine. It is only
equipped with 1 GB memory. I have no intention of changing the
SCSI-controller in that machine so I'll be glad to test any patches. Be
warned that I don't have the machine close by though so it might take a
day or two before I can test anything you send.

I apologize for my slowness, but I finally tested netconsole (with
netcat on the receiving side) and it worked for me.
test system boots with:
netconsole=6665@192.168.1.104/eth0,6666@192.168.1.107/00:0e:35:4c:9a:0c
and the target system runs netcat (nc):
nc -l -u -p 6666

The only 2 differences that I can see that would affect this
(diff patch-2.6.12.1 vs. patch-2.6.1.2) are: (cut-n-paste, so
has whitespace munging)

backed out (-R, reversed). I don't see any other patches that could
be the cause. If this isn't the problem, I would have to begin
to suspect some kind of toolchain problem.

or otherwise.

Ohhhh... Ok, before you discover it yourself - the fault is mine, to be
more precise, my patch, that somehow got applied... The long interesting
discussion that followed the review by Jens Axboe, who revealed its bogus
nature, didn't produce a replacement patch, mainly because there wasn't
anybody with dc395x and highmem, until you came...:-) I just forgot /
didn't realise it actually made its way into the mainline...
So, now that we have somebody to test alternative patches, let's try it...
Please, first revert the first patch (apply with -R), and then apply the
second one. There, probably, will be offsets, don't worry about them.
Warning: untested. Please, try some read-only test first, if you get so
far at all... I prepared this patch a long time ago, and didn't revisit it
since then, hope, it's still fresh enough:-)
Including as attachments for easier separation.

I wrote a patch, which propagated into the mainline, before Jens A.
(added to CC:) noticed, that it was buggy. Now Pierre actually hit that
bug. Yesterday in

I sent him and to the SCSI list a patch, which made his system again
usable. Which doesn't mean, however, that the patch is correct. The patch
uses the same 2 functions that I used earlier in a proposed in

patch to tmscsim:
static void *dc395x_kmap_atomic_sg(struct scatterlist *sg, int sg_count,
size_t *offset, size_t *len)

to atomically map and unmap a byte sequence from an sg. This has also been
discussed around April this year in a thread with subject: "Re: [PATCH]
dc395x: Fix support for highmem." That discussion didn't come to a
definite conclusion. As well as my patch to tmscsim didn't produce any
reaction, and, I think, wasn't included in any "official" tree.
Now, it would be best, I think, if somebody could review the patches to
dc395x and tmscsim. In case the 2 functions are correct, they could be
included in a central file (scsi_lib?) for all drivers, needing PIO (I
think IDE and libata won't be able to use them in this form). The rest of
the 2 patches could then be applied to respective drivers.

Do you have something specific in mind or you just mean drivers, that I
mentioned: IDE and libata? If the latter - don't know. I seem to remember
as somebody described their requirements in the April discussion, they
seemed different enough to me. I am pretty sure IDE was mentioned as also
doing PIO sometimes, not even sure if libata really was also discussed. If
you mean something specific, like iscsi, - what exactly?

Well, iscsi too, but there is the scatterwalk code which the crypto api
uses today and looks similar to what ide, libata, and scsi need.

Ok, I see what you mean now. Well, my impression is that one could,
certainly, merge the 2 APIs, but this would incur overhead for both usage
patterns: crypto traverses the list page / segment at a time, I think,
some other block users (IDE?) would need the same; whereas the code I am
proposing is optimised for the case when one needs just to map a few bytes
from the sg-list, access them, and unmap.
Have I got it right? Other opinions? Perhaps, a lib/scattergather.c with
these both APIs, and, possibly, others?

OK, why don't we do this. I'll put it into scsi-misc-2.6; that will
queue it for 2.6.14 and also put it in -mm. It will probably be a month
at least before scsi-misc-2.6 goes into 2.6.14, so you have until that
time to find problems in it and back it out ...

You were faster than I - I checked scsi-misc-2.6, you already applied the
first version:-( But it will trigger on every dc395x, which is, of course,
useless. Could you, please, replace it with the one below, or should I
send an incremental patch? Really sorry.
