Hi,

On a Dell PowerEdge 2900 III I have a PERC6/i (MegaRaid SAS 1078). From
the controller bios is seems I have to create a "raid0 virtual drive"
for each physical disk or in order for them to appear in Linux.

As I intend to use none of that controller's raid features, is it at all
possible to switch it to plain JBOD mode?

You need use LSI application to configure the JBOD before to use it.

OK, I installed it and tried:

	MegaCli64 -AdpSetProp -EnableJBOD -1 -aALL

but this seems to do nothing (maybe after reboot?), and

	MegaCli64 -PDMakeJBOD -PhysDrv 0:0 -aAll

gives this error (tried most permutations):

	Invalid input at or near token 0

You also can use ctrl^H during the controller post to configure the JBOD.

Unfortuntely I found no way to configure disks in JBOD mode through the
adapter bios. A google search seems to indicate other users have the
same problem.

Apparently a firmware change (to "initiator and target" mode) is
required to turn that adapter's into a simple non-raid SATA controller
but I couldn't find it anywhere.

Any idea?

Oh, you mean Ctrl-H, not the usual Ctrl-R.

Is that a secret cheat code (like in Doom :-) ?

I'll try it a soon as my raid6 partition finishes resync'ing.

You are right.  Ctrl-R for PERC... and ctrl-H for LSI.

OK, I tried Ctrl-H during adapter post and nothing (apparently)
happened.

However my syslog has:

	scsi2 : LSI SAS based MegaRAID driver
	Oct 25 14:48:27 grml kernel: [    1.956381] scsi 2:0:0:0: Direct-Access     ATA      Hitachi HDS72101 A70M PQ: 0 ANSI: 5

Does that "Direct-Access" mean I'm now in JBOD mode?

Bzzt. Nope.
IT firmware is for the 'plain' mptsas (LSI SAS 1078) only.
PERC6/i is based upon the 'Megaraid' SAS 1078, which is using the
same SAS chip but has an additional (hardware) RAID controller.

You cannot change the firmware here.

And yes, megacli is notoriously tricky to invoke.
It really needs to get used to.
