When adding other internal users of the framebuffer subsystem, we need a
way to get references to framebuffers. These two functions already exist
so export them.

Fblog displays all kernel log messages on all connected framebuffers. It
replaces fbcon when CONFIG_VT=n is selected. Its main purpose is to debug
boot problems by displaying the whole boot log on the screen. This patch
provides the first dummy module-init/deinit functions.

As it uses all the font and fb functions I placed it in
drivers/video/console. However, this means that we need to move the check
for CONFIG_VT in Makefile/Kconfig from drivers/video into
drivers/video/console as fblog does not depend on CONFIG_VT.

If we want to use font-draw-operations in other modules than fbcon, we
need to split this function off of fbcon headers and sources. This also
makes bit_putcs() totally independent of vc_* and fbcon_* structures.

As scr_read() cannot be called inside of non-fbcon/vt functions, we need
to assemble the buffer before passing it to fbdraw_font(). This slows down
this operations a little bit but my rough benchmark showed that it didn't
really matter. Anyway, if it does, we can still put it into VT_BUF_HAVE_RW
conditions so platforms that don't use it won't be affected. And for other
platforms we can add the buffer to the vc-struct so we can reuse it.

If we want to use update_attr() independently from fbcon, we need to split
it off from bitblit.c and fbcon.h. Therefore, introduce a new header and
source file (fbdraw.[ch]) which does not depende on vc_* and fbcon_*
structures in any way.

This does not introduce any new code nor does it make the paths deeper,
it simply splits the function off.

The other update_attr() functions (inside the rotation sources) seem
similar but are significantly different and I haven't found a way to merge
them efficiently (which is probably the reason why they are split off
now). Furthermore, I do not intend to use them in the coming code so there
is no need to split them off.

If not disabled or suspended, we now blit the console data to each
framebuffer. We only redraw on changes to avoid consuming too much CPU
power.

This isn't optimized for speed, currently. However, fblog is mainly used
for debugging purposes so this can be optimized later.

We want to print the kernel log to all FBs so we need a console driver.
This registers the driver on startup and writes all messages to all
registered fblog instances.

We cannot share a console buffer between FBs because they might have
different resolutions. Therefore, we create one buffer per object. We
destroy the buffer during close() so we do not waste memory if it is not
used.

Hi

This is version 2 of the fblog driver. The fblog driver allows showing the
kernel console on all available framebuffers. It's a replacement for CONFIG_VT
and fbcon that is much, much smaller and simpler. It should be used for
debugging purposes only, therefore, it is currently not optimized for speed.

Three patches extract update_attr(), bit_putcs() and get/put_fb_info() so they
can be used from fblog, the other patches actually implement fblog.

Version 2 addresses the issues from the last series. I extracted bit_putcs()
into fbdraw_font() so we have a single function shared between fbcon and fblog
to draw text. Furthermore, I reworked the framebuffer-registration logic inside
of fblog so there shouldn't be any more races with fbmem.c fb registration.
There is also a new configuration parameter that allows enabling fblog only on
specific framebuffers as requested from several people.

I also redid the whole patch-split so it should be much easier to follow. I am
using this driver on my x86_64 machine without any problems. If you remove the
"!VT" line in Kconfig then this can even be used with VTs enabled (even though
this is kind of racy between fbcon and fblog, obviously). Unloading the module
still has to be done with "rmmod -f fblog" as we still have a reference to our
own module. I haven't found a way to avoid this.

The reason why I wrote this driver is to make CONFIG_VT obsolete. This way I can
drop a lot of code from the kernel and make it much smaller. In combination with
user-space terminals like "kmscon" there is actually no need for in-kernel
terminals anymore.

This patchset is built based on linux-next as I have no idea whose tree this is
going through.

This opens the framebuffer upon registration so we can use it for
drawing-operations. On unregistration we close it again.

To avoid deadlocks, we need to tell fblog_open/close() whether the
framebuffer is currently locked. This is because some fb-notifiers are
called with the lock held and others without it. We cannot release it in
the notifier as this might confuse other registered callbacks if they
actually depend on the lock to be continously held (such a callback is
currently no available in the kernel, but may be added some time later).

One fblog object is associated to each registered framebuffer. This way,
we can draw the console to each framebuffer. When a framebuffer driver
unregisters a framebuffer, we also unregister our fblog object. That is,
our lifetime is coupled to the lifetime of the framebuffer. However, this
does not mean that we are always active. On the contrary, we do not even
own a reference to the framebuffer. We don't need it as we are notified
_before_ the last reference is dropped.

However, if other users have a reference to our object, we simply mark it
as dead when the associated framebuffer dies and leave it alone. When the
last reference is dropped, it will be automatically freed.

Not beyond reserving the region which you've said you've covered.

What you may want to try is making sure Linux doesn't program the DMA
controller (in case its doing something which disables the port in poking
at it).

Beyond that I guess ask the manufacturer for info.

I've got a board based on the Vortex86DX CPU which is an x86 based
microcontroller. It has five 16550A UARTS, four (COM1-COM4) of which
are at the usual i/o port addresses (0x3f8, 0x2f8, 0x3e8, 0x2e8) but
the fifth (COM9) is at 0x010, irq 9.

The problem is that I can't get the fifth one (COM9) to work in Linux.
COM9 works correctly in a stand-alone DOS application when accessed at
i/o port 0x010, but I can't even detect it from Linux.

What I've done so far:

* added COM9 to /drivers/tty/serial/8250/  (hacked existing driver to
probe at 0x010)

* enabled DEBUG_AUTOCONF in /drivers/tty/serial/8250/8250.c so I can
see when and which addresses are being probed.

* editted /arch/x86/kernel/setup.c because i/o port 0x010 overlapped
an existing region reserved for dma1 which caused request_region() to
fail. Datasheet for CPU confirmed different reserved i/o port regions.

Result: the kernel failed to probe the UART at address 0x010 with the
error "IER test failed".

I used an i/o port probing utility to manually read/write port 0x010
but I could not detect any 16550A registers in the 0x010 to 0x017
region. It appears there is nothing there. I tried to write and read
back data from the scratch register (offset +7), but it did nothing.
My same tests pass on the other four UART addresses.

The datasheet for the CPU doesn't say much about COM9.

On page 156 it mentions an "On-Chip Device Control Register" on the
Southbridge which has a bit for doing "something" with COM9, but it
doesn't say what it does. AFAIK the DOS application does not configure
the Southbridge.

I wrote a utility to read and write the Southbridge registers but I
still failed to detect the UART.

Am I on the right path?

What else should I try?

Would Linux block my ability to manually probe these i/o ports?

* [PATCH 1/2] pch_uart: Fix rx error interrupt setting issue

Rx Error interrupt(E.G. parity error) is not enabled.
So, when parity error occurs, error interrupt is not occurred.
As a result, the received data is not dropped.

This patch adds enable/disable rx error interrupt code.

If we want to use font-draw-operations in other modules than fbcon, we
need to split this function off of fbcon headers and sources. This also
makes bit_putcs() totally independent of vc_* and fbcon_* structures.

As scr_read() cannot be called inside of non-fbcon/vt functions, we need
to assemble the buffer before passing it to fbdraw_font(). This slows down
this operations a little bit but my rough benchmark showed that it didn't
really matter. Anyway, if it does, we can still put it into VT_BUF_HAVE_RW
conditions so platforms that don't use it won't be affected. And for other
platforms we can add the buffer to the vc-struct so we can reuse it.

If we want to use update_attr() independently from fbcon, we need to split
it off from bitblit.c and fbcon.h. Therefore, introduce a new header and
source file (fbdraw.[ch]) which does not depende on vc_* and fbcon_*
structures in any way.

This does not introduce any new code nor does it make the paths deeper,
it simply splits the function off.

The other update_attr() functions (inside the rotation sources) seem
similar but are significantly different and I haven't found a way to merge
them efficiently (which is probably the reason why they are split off
now). Furthermore, I do not intend to use them in the coming code so there
is no need to split them off.

Hi

This is a patchset that moves update_attr() and bit_putcs() into a separate
source file and makes both files not depend on any vc_* or fbcon_* structures
and code. That is, we can now safely use both in the fblog patchset that I sent
last month. Otherwise, we would need to copy both functionalities.

The rotation helpers have very similar functions which do the same but with
rotation in mind. I didn't find an efficient way to merge them so I decided to
leave them as they are. Furthermore, I am not using them so there is no need to
split them off.

I actually don't know who is taking patches for fblog and which trees they are
going through, but if you think I should include the patches in the fblog
patchset instead, I will do so. Otherwise, it would be nice if they could be
applied separately. The second fblog patchset will follow tomorrow.

I also tested both patches on my machine and couldn't notice any performance
breakdowns, but it would be nice if someone else could test them, too. The
second patch mentions this shortly, regarding the additional kmalloc().

I've not pushed them into linux-next, because my nightly test builds
for Versatile were failing due to the LEDS stuff in arm-soc, and
that's one of the platforms your patches have the potential to affect.

Now that the LEDS stuff has been dropped out of arm-soc, the build
results are a lot more promising, and I'm now happier to move them
into linux-next.

NAK.  It's the entire register definitions for the PL08x, which we really
should not be exporting to common code.

Please wait until _after_ my DMA engine stuff (which is now in linux-next)
makes its way upstream before touching any of this stuff, otherwise there's
going to be conflicts.

As part of my patch series, this gets rid of a number of uses of it in
arch/arm, but there's still the .cctl_memcpy initializer which does. I've
not yet checked whether all implementations use the same value (they
probably do), and if so then it should be eliminated from platform code
and moved into the driver.

I've talked about asm/hardware/pl080.h within the last week on this very
thread... and it's disappointing to have to re-say what I said because
you've not read my previous postings.

I already have this in place for other drivers that I'm going to use
with the pci-amba bridge. They have already been picked up by Rusell,
but they are not in linux-next yet.  So maybe other people have more
errors than me related to sizes.h, but this for mmci is trivial with
the other stuff in place.

Ok for the rest, I'll submit a patch set following your suggestions
when the other sizes.h stuff reaches linux-next.

Note that there is already an include/linux/amba/pl08x.h.
I would just move the few parts of pl080.h that are actually
needed with global visibility there, and move the rest
to drivers/dma/.

Ack on the linux/sizes.h, that definitely makes sense.

I'm not sure I want to spread readsl/writesl beyond the architectures
that already have it. Maybe instead change the driver to use ioread32_rep,
which is already available on all architectures and is defined the
same way as readsl on ARM.

This one on the other hand makes sense to be defined on all architectures
IMHO. I don't mind restricting the driver to ARM for now, but having

in "make oldconfig":


This is a sum up of the errors in all driver that are
enabled by telling "CONFIG_ARM_AMBA=y" in the x86 config.

   drivers/dma/pl330.c: register names conflict with arch symbols
     proposed fix: use proper prefix names

   drivers/dma/amba-pl08x.c: needs <asm/hardware/pl080.h>
     proposed fix: move pl080.h to include/linux

   drivers/gpio/gpio-pl061.c: uses chained_irq_enter/exit
     proposed fix: depend on CONFIG_ARM (the function only exists in arm)

   drivers/mmc/host/mmci.c: uses <asm/sizes.h>
   drivers/mmc/host/mmci.c: uses readsl/writesl
     proposed fix: use linux/sizes.h and provide readsl/writesl like others do

   drivers/spi/spi-pl022.c: warning for an integer size mismatch
     proposed fix: none by now

   drivers/watchdog/sp805_wdt.c: uses writel_relaxed

So, if you agree, I would:

    - fix the two dma engines (checking pl080 against russell's pending
    patches)

    - make pl061 and sp805_wdt.c depends on CONFIG_ARM

    - temporarily do the same for mmci, which I'll make work soon as
    I have it under my pci bridge

    - ignore the warning on spi-pl022 until I find a fix

    - resubmit my enabling of arm_amba for x86 and my pci-to-amba bridge
    driver.
