AFAIK, the root node needs to have the CPU which is using the DT. So,
the hierarchy will change based on CPU view (if we describe it fully).
How well we can reuse individual interconnect segments is something I
have to think about / experiment. Will have to be wary of any "short
paths" or "cross connections".

* [patch v26 0/4] JTAG driver introduction
From: Oleksandr Shamray @ 2018-06-15 16:45 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: gregkh, arnd
Cc: linux-kernel, linux-arm-kernel, devicetree, openbmc, joel, jiri,

openocd-devel-owner, linux-api, davem, mchehab, Oleksandr Shamray
When a need raise up to use JTAG interface for system's devices
programming or CPU debugging, usually the user layer
application implements jtag protocol by bit-bang or using a
proprietary connection to vendor hardware.
This method can be slow and not generic.
We propose to implement general JTAG interface and infrastructure
to communicate with user layer application. In such way, we can
have the standard JTAG interface core part and separation from
specific HW implementation.
This allow new capability to debug the CPU or program system's
device via BMC without additional devices nor cost.
This patch purpose is to add JTAG master core infrastructure by
defining new JTAG class and provide generic JTAG interface
to allow hardware specific drivers to connect this interface.
This will enable all JTAG drivers to use the common interface
part and will have separate for hardware implementation.
The JTAG (Joint Test Action Group) core driver provides minimal generic
JTAG interface, which can be used by hardware specific JTAG master
controllers. By providing common interface for the JTAG controllers,
user space device programing is hardware independent.
Modern SoC which in use for embedded system' equipped with
internal JTAG master interface.
This interface is used for programming and debugging system's
hardware components, like CPLD, FPGA, CPU, voltage and
industrial controllers.
Firmware for such devices can be upgraded through JTAG interface during
Runtime. The JTAG standard support for multiple devices programming,
is in case their lines are daisy-chained together.
For example, systems which equipped with host CPU, BMC SoC or/and
number of programmable devices are capable to connect a pin and
select system components dynamically for programming and debugging,
This is using by the BMC which is equipped with internal SoC master
controller.
For example:
BMC JTAG master --> pin selected to CPLDs chain for programming (filed
upgrade, production)
BMC JTAG master --> pin selected to voltage monitors for programming
(field upgrade, production)
BMC JTAG master --> pin selected to host CPU (on-site debugging
and developers debugging)
For example, we can have application in user space which using calls
to JTAG driver executes CPLD programming directly from SVF file
The JTAG standard (IEEE 1149.1) defines the next connector pins:
- TDI (Test Data In);
- TDO (Test Data Out);
- TCK (Test Clock);
- TMS (Test Mode Select);
- TRST (Test Reset) (Optional);
The SoC equipped with JTAG master controller, performs
device programming on command or vector level. For example
a file in a standard SVF (Serial Vector Format) that contains
boundary scan vectors, can be used by sending each vector
to the JTAG interface and the JTAG controller will execute
the programming.
Initial version provides the system calls set for:
- SIR (Scan Instruction Register, IEEE 1149.1 Instruction Register scan);
- SDR (Scan Data Register, IEEE 1149.1 Data Register scan);
- RUNTEST (Forces the IEEE 1149.1 bus to a run state for a specified
number of clocks.
SoC which are not equipped with JTAG master interface, can be built
on top of JTAG core driver infrastructure, by applying bit-banging of
TDI, TDO, TCK and TMS pins within the hardware specific driver.

Initial patch for JTAG driver
JTAG class driver provide infrastructure to support hardware/software
JTAG platform drivers. It provide user layer API interface for flashing
and debugging external devices which equipped with JTAG interface
using standard transactions.
Driver exposes set of IOCTL to user space for:
- XFER:
- SIR (Scan Instruction Register, IEEE 1149.1 Data Register scan);
- SDR (Scan Data Register, IEEE 1149.1 Instruction Register scan);
- RUNTEST (Forces the IEEE 1149.1 bus to a run state for a specified
number of clocks).
- SIOCFREQ/GIOCFREQ for setting and reading JTAG frequency.
Driver core provides set of internal APIs for allocation and
registration:
- jtag_register;
- jtag_unregister;
- jtag_alloc;
- jtag_free;
Platform driver on registration with jtag-core creates the next
entry in dev folder:

+ tristate "JTAG support"
+ help
+ This provides basic core functionality support for JTAG class devices.
+ Hardware that is equipped with a JTAG microcontroller can be
+ supported by using this driver's interfaces.
+ This driver exposes a set of IOCTLs to the user space for
+ the following commands:
+ SDR: Performs an IEEE 1149.1 Data Register scan
+ SIR: Performs an IEEE 1149.1 Instruction Register scan.
+ RUNTEST: Forces the IEEE 1149.1 bus to a run state for a specified
+ number of clocks or a specified time period.
+
+ If you want this support, you should say Y here.
+
+ To compile this driver as a module, choose M here: the module will
+ be called jtag.

+Linux kernel JTAG support
+=========================
+
+JTAG is an industry standard for verifying hardware. JTAG provides access to
+many logic signals of a complex integrated circuit, including the device pins.
+
+A JTAG interface is a special interface added to a chip.
+Depending on the version of JTAG, two, four, or five pins are added.
+
+The connector pins are:
+ TDI (Test Data In)
+ TDO (Test Data Out)
+ TCK (Test Clock)
+ TMS (Test Mode Select)
+ TRST (Test Reset) optional
+
+JTAG interface is designed to have two parts - basic core driver and
+hardware specific driver. The basic driver introduces a general interface
+which is not dependent of specific hardware. It provides communication
+between user space and hardware specific driver.
+Each JTAG device is represented as a char device from (jtag0, jtag1, ...).
+Access to a JTAG device is performed through IOCTL calls.
+
+Call flow example:
+User: open -> /dev/jatgX
+User: ioctl -> /dev/jtagX -> JTAG core driver -> JTAG hardware specific driver
+User: close -> /dev/jatgX

Curious on why you asked about this. Are you suggesting why not:
"ti,<new-soc>-uart", "ti,<old-soc>-uart"
or you are asking why introduce "ti,<new-soc>-uart" unless there is
clear demonstrable need for using it in driver code.
In general, I think "ti,<new-soc>-uart", "ti,<old-soc>-uart" in
device-tree (and by extension in binding document) is better even in
there are no _known_ incompatibilities at the time of initial driver
submission. The reason is silicon integration and process differences
many times spill over into driver.
Of course, the idea is not to go postal and create a new compatible for
every pin-compatible part number that gets created, but probably a new
compatible should be created for a new silicon die.
We have just started introducing support for this SoC, and since it
reuses many IPs, this question is likely to come up again.
In this particular case though, Nishanth is perfectly right in not saying
compatible : should be "ti,am654-uart", "ti,omap4-uart"
Because we *know* UART DMA integration is different and a match against
omap4 would result in non-working UART once DMA is enabled by default.
Thanks,
Sekhar

Yes, and chip designers can't be trusted. ;)

Yes, that's the criteria I would use too. That's sometimes hard if
it's not the chip vendor doing the DT bindings.

Okay, makes sense. I'd suggest rewording the commit message to include
this. The "compatible to 8250 except for DMA" part I would have
applied to all TI UARTs rather than DMA differences with other TI
UARTs.

Sorry, this patch is incomplete. Since we are going to use printk_safe()
API in modules (serial console drivers) printk_safe() functions [enter and
exit] must be exported via EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL().

It will not break existing big-endian SoC as SWAP_IO_SPACE is disabled.
Disable SWAP_IO_SPACE will not impact ltq_r32 as it uses non-byte
swapping __raw_readl() and it makes readl work in big-endian kernel too.
The old Lantiq platform enable SWAP_IO_SPACE to support PCI as it's a
little-endian bus plus PCI TX/RX swap enable impacted both data and
control path.
Alternatively PCI device driver has to do endian swap, It is better to
let PCI device driver to do endian swap instead because SWAP_IO_SPACE is
global wide macro.
Once we set it, other peripheral such as USB has to change its register
access as well

In this chip only asc1 can be used as console, so serial0 is defined in

Hello,
This is the second version of driver. I added a mfd driver which by
default probes atmel_serial driver and if in dt is specified to probe
the spi driver, then the spi-at91-usart driver will be probed. The
compatible for atmel_serial is now the compatible for at91-usart mfd
driver and compatilbe for atmel_serial driver was changed in order to
keep the bindings for serial as they are.
Changes in v8:
- fixed passing an empty mfd cell if "atmel,usart-mode" value is invalid
Changes in v7:
- synced up SPDIX license with module license
- numbering of usart modes starts from 0 insteand of 1
Changes in v6:
- removed unused compatible strings from serial and spi drivers
Changes in v5:
- fixed usage of stdout-path property with atmel_serial driver
Changes in v4:
- modified the spi driver to use cs gpio support form spi subsystem
- fixed dma transfers for serial driver
- squashed binding for spi and serial and moved them to mfd/atmel-usart.txt
Changes in v3:
- fixed spi slaves probing
Changes in v2:
- added at91-usart mfd driver
- modified spi-at91-usart driver to work as mfd driver child
- modified atmel_serial driver to work as mfd driver child
Changes in v1:
- added spi-at91-usart driver

This mfd driver is just a wrapper over atmel_serial driver and
spi-at91-usart driver. Selection of one of the drivers is based on a
property from device tree. If the property is not specified, the default
driver is atmel_serial.

* [PATCH v8 5/6] spi: at91-usart: add driver for at91-usart as spi
From: Radu Pirea @ 2018-06-18 10:08 UTC (permalink / raw)

In-Reply-To: <20180618100829.13875-1-radu.pirea@microchip.com>
This is the driver for at91-usart in spi mode. The USART IP can be configured
to work in many modes and one of them is SPI.
The driver was tested on sama5d3-xplained and sama5d4-xplained boards with
enc28j60 ethernet controller as slave.

This was a more general comment about 'aliases' being board specific
in principle (though we've had exceptions in the past). Even if there
is only one uart on the chip, I'd recommend following the same
conventions as the other chips that have more than one uart.

Right, I see now what you mean. I was getting confused by how MIPS
defines the __raw_* accessors differently from other big-endian
architectures when CONFIG_SWAP_IO_SPACE is disabled.
I suppose this just means you can't use any PCI drivers using __raw_
accessors or memcpy_fromio(), but your patch to the serial driver is fine.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean here, I would assume that aiming for
maximum compatibility with existing drivers would be the main goal here.
The USB platform drivers can already deal with being compiled for either
(or both) endianess.

The tty layer code there is not re-entrant. Nor is it supposed to be

I don't see how this helps - if you recurse into the uart code you are
still hitting the paths that are unsafe when re-entered. All you've done
is messed up a pile of locking code on critical performance paths.
As it stands I think it's a bad idea.

The cure is worse than the disease.
The only case that's worth looking at is the direct polled console code
paths. The moment you touch the other layers you add essentially never
needed code to hot paths.
Given printk nowdays is already somewhat unreliable with all the perf
related changes, and we have other good debug tools I think it would be
far cleaner to have some kind of
if (spin_trylock(...)) {
console_defer(buffer);
return;
}
helper layer in the printk/console logic, at least for the non panic/oops
cases.

Could be.
But at least we have circular locking dependency in tty,
see [1] for more details:
tty_port->lock => uart_port->lock
CPU0
tty
spin_lock(&tty_port->lock)
printk()
call_console_drivers()
foo_console_write()
spin_lock(&uart_port->lock)
Whereas we normally have
uart_port->lock => tty_port->lock
CPU1
IRQ
foo_console_handle_IRQ()
spin_lock(&uart_port->lock)
tty
spin_lock(&tty_port->lock)
If we switch to printk_safe when we take tty_port->lock then we
remove the printk->uart_port chain from the picture.

The only new thing is that we inc/dec per-CPU printk context
variable when we lock/unlock tty/uart port lock:
printk_safe_enter() -> this_cpu_inc(printk_context);
printk_safe_exit() -> this_cpu_dec(printk_context);
How does this help? Suppose we have the following
IRQ
foo_console_handle_IRQ()
spin_lock(&uart_port->lock)
uart_write_wakeup()
tty_port_tty_wakeup()
tty_port_default_wakeup()
printk()
call_console_drivers()
foo_console_write()
spin_lock(&uart_port->lock) << deadlock
If we take uart_port lock from printk_safe context, we remove the
printk->call_console_drivers->foo_console_write->spin_lock
chain. Because printk() output will endup in a per-CPU buffer,
which will be flushed later from irq_work. So the whole thing
becomes:
IRQ
foo_console_handle_IRQ()
printk_safe_enter()
spin_lock(&uart_port->lock)
uart_write_wakeup()
tty_port_tty_wakeup()
tty_port_default_wakeup()
printk() << we don't re-enter foo_console_driver
<< from printk() anymore
printk_safe_log_store()
irq_work_queue
spin_unlock(&uart_port->lock)
printk_safe_exit()
iret
#flush per-CPU buffer
IRQ
printk_safe_flush_buffer()
vprintk_deferred()

Because of this_cpu_inc(printk_context) / this_cpu_dec(printk_context)?
May be. That's why I put RFC :)

spin_trylock() in every ->foo_console_write() callback?
This still will not address the reported deadlock [1].
