To test this further I reverted this commit and it does indeed seem to
fix the problem - the next line on the console in systems that boot (as
opposed to fail) is indeed one about the System Clock.
(I am now getting a lot of messages about failures of the udev script -
possibly because I have just turned a lot of debugging stuff on - in any
case the system does boot and works with that commit reverted).
I don't pretend to know why Magnus's patch is breaking the Dreamcast,
but I am pretty sure it is. Could it be reverted before being pushed
upstream while we wait for one that works?
Thanks

Please test with it reverted and with no changes to the defconfig. If you
are randomly going to change variables, then the bug report is
speculation at best. If you are going to make config changes at the same
time that you revert changes, you are not debugging the problem at hand.
It is not even worth looking at this until you are sure the same scenario
exists without config changes.

These messages are about allocation failures, the exact same thing that
leads to your OOM. (It does help to actually read the error messages
rather than dismiss them as superfluous). While it is possible that the
timer patch pushed you over the edge on memory allocation, nothing else
suggests that you have pinpointed the real problem. Obviously udev did
not used to hit allocation failures, and we need to know when that
started, or what you did to your environment that causes it.

I used the same configuration throughout the bisection. So there is a
real bug there. There is no speculation involved. Builds before a
certain point will boot, builds after do not. And the patch that breaks
the kernel is the one I have identified.

Could you explain what you mean by "These messages are about allocation
failures, the exact same thing that leads to your OOM."
Isn't one a failure to allocate space on a block device and the other
running out of memory, or have I missed something?
Anyway, with the config I use to boot the Dreamcast normally, the kernel
with the timer patch fails to boot (about one time out of three):

It seems pretty self evident. If a virtual filesystem is returning
allocation failures, you have a problem, and you need to figure out why
you are getting those allocation failures from udev. The timer patch
might cause enough pressure that it makes the problem manifest in an oops
more readily, but your system is completely broken or without the timer
patch if you can't allocate pages to create device nodes, period.

What do you think the backing store for udev is?

It's memory use is arbitrarily set in a config file. It's not the same
as running out of memory, just reaching that limit.
In any case I have not been able to reproduce those messages without the
debug options set to the max, but I have certainly been able to
reproduce the OOM condition.
There is clearly a regression here. I am puzzled about why you seem so
anxious not to acknowledge that there is.
Up to you.

No, it's not the same as running out of memory, but at no point did I
suggest it was, only that it served to increase pressure, and that if you
were already hitting allocation failures from that alone, then whether
something on the kernel side pushes the system in to an OOM condition on
top of that is hardly the root issue.

I am aware of the fact there is a regression, my point is that it seems
something got broken much earlier and that the timer change in question
is ultimately not the main issue. In the kernel we prefer to debug and
fix root problems rather than the symptoms that fall out of them. If you
don't wish to bisect down to the point where you didn't get allocation
failures in userspace, that is likewise entirely up to you.

Unless you have some dreamcast specific timer dependencies I really
doubt that this patch is the cause of your problems. How about
creating a smaller kernel? Take the defconfig and remove for instance
cpufreq, mtd and all filesystems except whatever your rootfs is on.
Cheers,

Well, I have done that and got the same results. I cannot actually
reproduce the udev script breakage, but can reproduce the OOM condition.
But I'll wait until all this is sucked into the .30-rc series and try
another bisection. The previous one was difficult because so many of the
bisected kernels were a priori broken due to issues with DMA that meant
make files had to be hacked to get them beyond an immediate breakage and
to the point where the OOM condition might be observed.
Whilst this wasn't an issue at the end of the process (ie the kernel
waiting to go into mainline doesn't have this DMA issue) it my be that
the true source of the breakage has been obscured.
When we get to the rc series I am assuming that won't be an issue...
