Hi Mike,
I didn't have time to do a full review; but here is what I was able to
go through.

"Emulate" is probably misleading since this driver *actually*
implements an spi bus using a multipurpose serial device. :-) Ditto
through the rest of the file.

This is rather ugly, and from the looks of it anytime the driver needs
this data it also has access to the master_data context, and there is
only ever one spi_message in flight anyway. The state value should be
moved into the master_data structure, and be made an int to remove the
ugly & risky casting.
> +
> +struct master_data;
file-scoped symbols need to have a driver prefix. Ditto down through
the file.

pdev is only ever used for accessing pdev->dev. Perhaps this should
reference struct device *dev directly.

Drop the volatile. Registers must never be dereferenced directly
anyway.

Illegal direct dereference; use ioread/iowrite instead. Ditto through
rest of file.

The SSYNC shouldn't be necessary with the correct accessors.

Consider assigning drv_data->rx to a u8* local variable. I think the
code will be more readable that way and will eliminate the cast.

Every single one of these accessors is wrapped with
bfin_sport_spi_{enable,disable}(). Perhaps those hooks belong at the
callsite.
