For the rest I have no definite answer yet, BUT:
mkdir /chroot/proc
touch /chroot/proc/mm
mount --bind /proc/mm /chroot/proc/mm
is reported to work (and I tested it once). On 2.4 kernels too. Surprise
surprise :-) !
