That's suspicious indeed.
Might be that mounting ext4 somehow triggers a bug in this hardware.
Does it work normally while it's blinking before disconnecting?
What sort of USB chip is in this HDD dock (lsusb)?
Did you try searching for other reports about problems with this chip?
