I have two TipToi Pens by Ravensburger. These are recognised as 04d6:e101 Mentor Graphics usbdisk when plugged into USB C port via USB C to micro B cable. When plugged into the USB A port, the following messages are reported into the journal: Okt 19 08:19:08 kernel: usb usb3-port2: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad? Okt 19 08:19:09 kernel: usb usb3-port2: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad? Okt 19 08:19:09 kernel: usb usb3-port2: attempt power cycle Okt 19 08:19:10 kernel: usb usb3-port2: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad? Okt 19 08:19:11 kernel: usb usb3-port2: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad? Okt 19 08:19:11 kernel: usb usb3-port2: unable to enumerate USB device I have two pens. I tried two cables delivered with them, as well as a different USB A to micro B cable I had. All exhibit the same issue. Does anyone have any ideas what could be the problem? My first guess is that both the laptop and the pen are slightly off-spec in some strange way, which causes them not to work together. The USB A slot on the laptop works fine with other devices, and the pen works with the laptop if connected to USB C. Best regards, Julian ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 8+ messages in thread

Something's slightly off in the laptop's USB controller or connector. If you still think it's a software issue rather than hardware, you can try posting a usbmon trace showing what happens when the device is plugged in. I suspect it won't reveal much, but you never know. Alan Stern Alan Stern ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 8+ messages in thread

The 1 bits indicate: connected, powered, reset finished, and connect status change (meaning there was a connection and/or disconnection since the last time the port's status was read). > 420a8780 1.037210 S Co:3:001:0 s 23 01 0010 0002 0000 0 > 420a8780 1.037218 C Co:3:001:0 0 0 > 420a8780 1.037222 S Co:3:001:0 s 23 03 0004 0002 0000 0 > 420a8780 1.037229 C Co:3:001:0 0 0 > 412663c0 1.190218 C Ii:3:001:1 0:2048 1 = > 04 > 412663c0 1.190231 S Ii:3:001:1 -:2048 4 < > 420a8780 1.238195 S Ci:3:001:0 s a3 00 0000 0002 0004 4 < > 420a8780 1.238216 C Ci:3:001:0 0 4 = > 01011100 > 420a8780 1.238227 S Co:3:001:0 s 23 01 0010 0002 0000 0 > 420a8780 1.238233 C Co:3:001:0 0 0 This part repeats over and over. It shows the port being reset, during which the device disconnects and reconnects, every single time. It's those disconnections which cause the initialization procedure to fail. Normally a device remains connected during the entire reset, and when the reset finishes, the port gets enabled so the computer can communicate with the device. That didn't happen here. There's no way to know from this what causes those disconnections to occur, but it looks like something is wrong at the hardware level. Alan ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 8+ messages in thread
