            Bug ID: 217511
Summary: HP Pavilion x2 - Charging over USB-C not working
           Product: Drivers
           Version: 2.5
          Hardware: AMD
                OS: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P3
         Component: USB
          Assignee: drivers_usb@kernel-bugs.kernel.org
          Reporter: aaron@ephasic.org
        Regression: No

I'm experiencing an issue where the laptop will not charge over USB-C while
booted into Linux. If I shutdown then it will charge and I don't experience
this behavior in Windows.

Looking at dmesg I see when plugging in the charger:
    hp_wmi: unkown event_id 131073 - 0x0

There are no events when unplugging the charger. The status LED never turns
orange which indicates charging while booted into Linux either.

Kernel: 6.3.3
Hardware: HP Pavilion x2 Detachable

--- Comment #1 from Aaron (aaron@ephasic.org) ---
It appears that HP's drivers are required for charging on Windows. I have a
fresh Windows 11 22H2 install with no additional drivers or updates installed
and charging is not working in it either.

Did you enable the UCSI-ACPI driver in your kernel config?

Perhaps you can attach your kernel config and dmesg.

I had a similar experience with my laptop. Suddenly the system would not accept
charge when I connected it to a particular USB-C charger with error messages
every other second like these:

    hp_wmi: Unknown event_id - 131073 - 0x0
    hp_wmi: Unknown event_id - 131073 - 0x1

My guess is that this is a notification from the firmware that it does not like
the power supply. Reconnecting the USB-C charger did not help, but the laptop
would happily accept charge from another USB-C charger. After I power-cycled
the problematic USB-C charger (and/or after I tested it with a PD trigger and a
dummy load) the laptop accepts charge from it again. Still getting one of those
messages every time I plug in that charger though, but nothing like that from
any other charger.

I had this happen to me today, also with an Elitebook, but different model.

Computer bat>95%, plugged to a charger that provides AT LEAST 40W. It charges
normally. I never see the Unknown event_id messages.

Computer bat>95%, plugged to a charger that provides UP TO 40W. Computer do
charge, but at random times:
- `acpi` will alternate between "Battery 0: Not charging, 95%" and "Battery 0:
Discharging, 95%", never "charging"
- KDE or any other battery watcher besides `acpi` command, would just show
"charging" at all times, no variation.
- virtualbox guest (win10enterprise ltsc) would sound the "charger unplugged"
immediately followed by "charger plugged" notification sound.
- kernel would log "kernel: hp_wmi: Unknown event_id - 131073 - 0x0" (never see
the 0x1 event, not once)
- the kernel messages and the windows virtualbox guest sounds were in perfect
sync.

In both cases my battery is indeed charging (the percentage always go up no
matter what of those things are happening). Can't say for speed/healthy to the
battery.

My guess is that is a low power charging mode event that the linux driver
doesn't know. And I don't know how much raw information the virtualbox drivers
do forward, but that old version (2021?) of windows' drivers was clearly seeing
it as a power cable disconnect.
