kernel log v6.5-rc4
On resume from suspend, since at least v6.1 and including v6.5-rc4 - an
external USB Ethernet device fails to resume due to:
usb usb2-port3: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?
Linux version 6.5.0-rc4+debian+tj (root@linux-builder) (gcc (Debian 12.2.0-14)
12.2.0, GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Debian) 2.40) #67 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Mon Jul
31 22:25:03 BST 2023
DMI: LENOVO 20W6001WUS/20W6001WUS, BIOS N34ET53W (1.53 ) 08/31/2022
The affected owner (nickname 'Chosen_') and myself worked in Matrix Linux room
to narrow down the cause by building and testing v6.5-rc4 when the Debian
distro v6.1 showed the problem. There is no difference in the symptoms or the
kernel messages between the versions.
Attached is the kernel log, `lspci -nnk` and `lsusb -vt`. The device is:

Does v6.0 not have this issue? Or is it hardware issue too?

Cannot say. The system when presented has Debian 12 amd64 which uses v6.1
kernel; Trying latest mainline was to test if the issue has been fixed since.
I've asked the owner to update the PC to the most recent firmware in case there
is some issue there but I do not see anything in the firmware changelog to
indicate it.
It seems to be the Lenovo Thinkpad USB3.x dock - I have seen other people
mention something like this in support chat channels but never focused on those
issues myself so no idea if this is a systemic problem.
Hopefully the owner can contribute more precise detail here with the precise
make/model/ID of the external dock.

Hi,
this sounds a bit like this:
https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-usb/msg242040.html
I have a very similar issue with this Lenovo dock (and on Dell WD docks, too),
although on Dell Laptops. But I do remember that I had this on a Lenovo laptop,
too.
However, I observed this not after suspend (never tried), but after a reboot:
when I go into the UFEI firmware menu, I cannot access the external network
interface on the dock (for doing a PXE boot over the net). Can you verify that
in your case this is the same? (I.e. after power off the net interface is
available in the UEFI firmware, but after a reboot it is not).
Regards,
Christian
