            Bug ID: 220686
           Summary: REGRESSION: USB devices not recognised when plugged to
                    Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports
           Product: Drivers
           Version: 2.5
    Kernel Version: 6.16.12
          Hardware: Intel
                OS: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: blocking
          Priority: P3
         Component: USB
          Assignee: drivers_usb@kernel-bugs.kernel.org
          Reporter: anonq@tutanota.com
        Regression: Yes

I'm on Linux (Fedora 42)
Kernel 6.14.0-63.fc42.x86_64

USB controllers are detected:

$ lspci -nn | grep -i thunderbolt

00:07.0 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation Meteor Lake-P Thunderbolt 4 PCI
Express Root Port #0 [8086:7ec4] (rev 10)
00:07.2 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation Meteor Lake-P Thunderbolt 4 PCI
Express Root Port #2 [8086:7ec6] (rev 10)
00:0d.0 USB controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation Meteor Lake-P Thunderbolt 4
USB Controller [8086:7ec0] (rev 10)
00:0d.2 USB controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation Meteor Lake-P Thunderbolt 4
NHI #0 [8086:7ec2] (rev 10)
00:0d.3 USB controller [0c03]: Intel Corporation Meteor Lake-P Thunderbolt 4
NHI #1 [8086:7ec3] (rev 10)

All firmware is up-to-date, so is Fedora Linux

When I plug a device in the USB4 port, dmesg doesn't change and the device
isn't detected at all

Booting from kernel 6.14.0-63.fc42.x86_64 works fine

Not sure which kernel version is broken? You listed 6.14.0-63.fc42 twice.

6.14 series is long obsolete, if Fedora still maintains it and screwed up on
-63 revision, that's on them. We don't even know what patches they ship.

If your problem is with upstream 6.16, that's frankly obsolete too, but at
least well known to anyone here.

Can you double check and specify clearly all known good and bad versions?

Thanks for clarifying; since I switching from obsolete kernels, I will pin the
6.14.0-63 one for now in my Fedora

The correct versions (fedora kernels):

6.14.0-63.fc42.x86_64 -> WORKS
6.16.12-200.fc42.x86_64 -> BROKEN

If you run 'lsusb', do you see fewer USB buses on the broken version?

Are you able to build and test upstream kernels from source, or work with
Fedora to nail down which change caused it on their kernels?

Sometimes distribution regressions aren't even caused by code changes, but by
changes to distribution's kernel config.

This was indeed a regression in the kernel, but it's been since fixed and
headed for upstream (if it hasn't already been applied):

The latest Fedora Kernel I can get is 6.17.8-200.fc42.x86_64 and the problem
still persists

--- Comment #7 from Michał Pecio (michal.pecio@gmail.com) ---
This commit seems irrelevant, it claims to fix a bug introduced in 6.18-rc1.

Can you post "lspci |grep USB" and "lsusb" from good and bad kernel, without
making any changes to connected USB and thunderbolt devices?

And if you don't know how to build kernels from source, can you at least get
other Fedora kernel packages (like 6.15 series) and see when was the bug
introduced?
