depends, mostly on the client and maybe interference/link quality.

you probably have to enable wmm [see hostapd docs], but because of the
compatibility issues anyone should refrain from

however, Atheros has just released a patchset+fw which brings AP
support to ath9k_htc.

ok, so it could be something else... maybe it's a driver bug, maybe
something is outdated [avoid hostapd older than 0.7,3], or maybe
just a simple configuration problem [on either side]?

you can't tell that by just looking at the low throughput figure.
Instead you probably have to capture the handshake between the
AP+client and look who's lying about their 11n capabilities.

Luckily, all mac80211-based driver come with a nifty feature which
allows you to monitor any incoming/outgoing data. Just setup a
monitor interface.

I had hostapd older than 0.7.3 but after upgrade there is the same problem.
There is only one change. Windows 7 is displaying it as 75 mbps
connection not 150 mbps (with the same config as with the older
version) but I have still 16 mbps dl rate.

I am using gentoo linux and I didn't compiled that driver manually. I
have that driver from 3.6.38 kernel.
I really want to make it work.

What should I do? Will OS change help?

That's an assert to catch unwanted calls into the driver by
the stack or from userspace. In this case the driver WARNED
that it received an update to the bss_conf after all virtual
interfaces have been removed. (This makes no sense, since
*vif might not point to an old/gone ieee80211_vif.)

But it's simple to fix: get compat-wireless.

you see minstrel does not know about ht frames at all! You need to
have minstrel_ht for it
to work properly. The weird thing is that minstrel_ht should be the
default rate control
[e.g. config.mk in compat-wireless should have:
CONFIG_MAC80211_RC_DEFAULT=minstrel_ht ]
algorithm, so the question is: who or what changed the default?

do you have a module option for mac80211 to overwrite ieee80211_default_rc_algo?
(check /sys/module/mac80211/parameters/ieee80211_default_rc_algo it should say
minstrel_ht)

And It's still the same.

Do you have other idea?

yup, but that's because of hostapd. You should start it with -d (or -dd)
and check the logs for something like:

"20/40 MHz operation not permitted on channel pri=7 sec=3 based on overlapping BSSes"

this is expected [see 802.11n 11.14.12 ] and you'll have to deal with
this issue differently [e.g.: move to another channel].

I have debug USE flag disabled, I recompiled hostapd with that flag
and now I can see log like your.
You are right it's BSSs.

Is there option to do not scan for overlapping BSSs?
I know that it'll break some standards but that other networks are
very week. I can't see them from my laptop.

Maybe, depending on the channel conditions, interferences etc.

Also, how do you measure the throughput? Is it TCP or UDP? Do you
use any higher level protocols like SMB, NFS or FTP?

300mbps is only possible in HT40 mode. However, hostapd will disable
HT40 if it detects
an other HT40 AP on an overlapping channel (in your case anything

Furthermore, it seems that the station 74:f0:6d:33:ea:00 isn't capable
of using multiple
spacial streams and thus is limited to MCS7. What client device is this?

He is working at 1 channel. I can easily reach 100 mbps with him.

I changed channel to 11 and I have MSC 5.

I have Azurewave NB290 in my notebook.
But I tested it also with Atheros 9280 and connection here was very
bad (8 mbps).

I checked it with wifi analyzer for android and that other network is
on 1-5 channels and that carl9170 network is on 5-9 channels, there is
no other networks, so it should work with better speed?

When I switched to Linux on my laptop it was working with 130.00 mbps
speed but was ultra unstable. (was disconnecting every minute and I

I tested i with 3 another N wireless cards and it's always working at
20 MHz channel 400 ns GI.
Why?

       tx bitrate:     135.0 MBit/s MCS 6 40Mhz short GI

But I can only get 16 mbps max.

stability by disabling the flakey hw crypto engine.
This can be done by setting nohwcrypt=1 [module parameter].

Furthermore, you could get a MIMO replacement for your client's
cost-reduced SISO ar9285 card. This way, ar9170 [or future devices]
are not limited to use only a single stream/chain [MCS0-7].
