kernel from 2.6.24 to 3.4-rc4.

It was OK to drop the Realtek addresses from this thread. They will ignore it

I didnt remove any mail address i simply forgot to hit the reply all button.

Previously i tried to build the subdirectory rtlwifi but that wasnt
possible, so build the entry tree compat-wireless and installed it,
but the problem about having repeated chars when typing and the mouse
freeze continues happening.

Now a different problem, i noticed that after kernel-3.3.1 it started
appearing less wifi networks, where i used to detect about 10 wifi
networks, with kernel > 3.3.1 it only detected about 2 or 3 wifi
networks, i reported that to the distro and they said was a problem
from upstream since they didnt had changed nothing regarding wifi, and
after i installed compat-wireless that was solved. Im running
kernel-3.3.4 with compat-wireless and it detects again about 10 wifi
networks.

Should i report this upstream so it can be fixed still in the
kkkkkernel 3.3.4 serie or you ccccccan do it?

By the way see how the characters "k" and "c" got repeated when i was
typing last paragraph.

That IS removing mail addresses.

Whatever patch that fixed that problem will be backported to 3.3.X if it can be. 
Not everything qualifies.

I see them, but they do not happen on my machine, thus I have no idea of the 
cause. So far, you can only say that they don't happen when rtl8192ce is not 
loaded; however, you have no network then either. The problem could be anywhere 
in the network stack.

You said earlier that you tried the Ubuntu Live system. Would it be possible to 
download and try the openSUSE 12.1 Live CD as well? As you have used Ubunbtu, 
you should try the Gnome version.

I run openSUSE 12.1 KDE, and I use NetworkManager.

I have many wifi devices, including both RTL8188CE and RTL8192CE. At the moment, 
I am running an RTL8188CE, which has been up for nearly 100 hours without 
dropping the connection, and with no problems with the keyboard. My kernel is 
from wireless-testing, which means that my wireless stuff is exactly what you 
got with compat-wireless.

So you also use wpa_supplicant, so what happens is that when i turn
off wpa_supplicant the problem goes away but i also loose wifi
internet, and of course if i unload the rtl8192ce module.

This problem has been existing for quite some time, also in another 2
machines that also have realtek wifi cards, so this problem isnt just
from this specific card, but i really cant tell if this is really some
caused by the realtek drivers or wpa_supplicant or any other thing...

I have mailed hostap mailing list to see what were the chances someone
knows about a similiar problem but the no one seams to know...

Yes, I use wpa_supplicant and I do not have the problem. If you change to an 
unencrypted AP, then wpa_supplicant will not be used. It will be loaded, but not 
used.

what version of wpa_supplicant are you using? Mine is 0.7.3.

ATM im using wpa_supplicant-2.0 thats the one from git (updated
today), with 0.7.3 i had the same issue.
But im starting to think this is caused by the Microsoft mouse i have
(Notebook Optical Mouse model:1020) i have (sometimes the cursor moves
alone to the corner of the screen), and this happens in windows and
linux, and if you and other users that have realtek cards do not
complain about this problem its rather strange that only happens with
me and my machines...
The only thing in common along these 3 machines that i have is the
mouse, since i use to put this mouse in every machine i touch, its
suspicious...

FWIW, I do recall seeing issues with my USB keyboard when testing with
rtl8192de.  I believe the problems went away when I disabled power management:

  options rtl8192de ips=0 swlps=0 fwlps=0

By the way, diddddd you were using any keyboard, mouse from microsoft?

Create a file named /etc/modprobe.d/50-rtl8192ce.conf and add the line below to it:

options rtl8192ce ips=0 swlps=0 fwlps=0

That will disable power saving for driver rtl8192ce.

By the way when i installed compat-wireless was in kernel-3.3.1 in
which used to be detected about 10 wifi networks, so when i said that
fixed the kernel-3.3.4 i was not correct.

Now i have installed compat-wireless for kernel-3.3.4 and it did not
changed anything, i continued detecting only 2 wifi networks, like the
router antenna didnt had any force, but when i boot kernel-3.3.1 i
have again about 10 wifi networks detected, so this is a problem that
appeared from kernel-3.3.2 and continues existing upstream.

When you 'modprobe -rv rtl8192ce && modprobe -v rtl8192ce', you will see the 
options listed.

I do not use anything from Microsoft.

You will need to bisect the differences between 3.3.1 and 3.3.2. I see all the 
local networks and cannot duplicate your problem. Thus, you will need to see 
what patch is causing the problem.

Well the problem while typing and having repeated characters and
sometimes the mouse frozen is gone when i runned that parameters for
rtl8192ce... finally a solution for that torment... well now you know
what was the cause and what needs to be fixed :)

Regarding the problem of kernel > 3.3.1 detect less wifi networks, i
will talk with the distro kernel maintainer to see if this can be some
caused by some patch that he adds to the distro kernel and then ill
let you know.

You keep talking about "antenna force". What does that mean?

That patch keeps your device from running forever at a maximum of 1 Mbps by 
adjusting the initial gain of the RX amplifier. You may reverse it if you want 
so that you can detect more APs when you scan; however, most people prefer to 
get better performance from the device. That patch will not be reversed.

As to the problems with power saving, I cannot fix a problem if I cannot 
duplicate it. The locking in that section has been reviewed by several people, 
and there are no glaring errors. If disabling power saving makes your box work, 
then that is what you need to do. That is why those parameters can be set at 
load time.

But isnt strange that the wifi driver can interfere in the keyboard
when typing? and also be capable to interfere with the pointer device?

Yes, but I cannot duplicate the problem. My experience is that unless I can do 
that, the probability of being able to fix it is very small. For example, it 
could be some interaction between the bridges for the PCIe and USB adapters. If 
so, it would be unique to your computer. If you want to ship me the box, I could 
probably work it out, but for now you should just use the work around.

I have another box with a different realtek wifi card in which happens
the same problem.
Im convinced that if you could run in one of these 2 wifi cards with a
microsoft mouse, you would be able to reproduce the problem.

It is very strange. I've had it happen to me before with a RAlink wireless card.

In my case, it was definitely an issue with the wireless card's
driver, however that doesn't mean that it's the same for you.

It's simply impossible to duplicate these sorts of issues without the
exact system that has the problem, so unless someone else has an
identical system and is experiencing this exact problem, only you will
be able to debug this.

Given that there are many people out there with working Realtek
wireless cards who are not experiencing this problem, it's unlikely
that this is an issue with that particular driver.

Also, there are many people (myself included) who use Microsoft
hardware products with their Linux computers without incident, so it
is unlikely to be related to the vendor of your keyboard / mouse.

To debug this, the first thing I'd do is read through your entire
dmesg output from a clean boot that's exhibiting these symptoms and
see if Linux is complaining about anything or if there are any errors.
Following up on any errors would probably be a good place to start. If
there is some form of misconfiguration of your hardware, it is likely
to be listed there, and following up on that would be another good
thing to do.

If there aren't any errors or warnings, the next thing I'd check
whether the Realtek card and the keyboard / mice controllers (USB host
or PS/2 port or whatever) are sharing any hardware resources. If they
are, you may be able to fix your system by convincing your BIOS to let
them have their own stuff. Another thing to look at is if there are
any changes to the resources your BIOS gives various devices when the
system has the card and when it doesn't, this may point you in the
direction of a different driver that has issues. (saving dmesgs,
stripping out the timestamps and diffing them is a good way to find
issues like this)

That's about the limit of my knowledge on this, but following up on
any errors or warnings in the dmesg output and talking to the
maintainers of any relevant hardware (or the subsystems it's attached
to) would be a good start.

Thanks for all the hints but im not an expert and also appars what i
have been trying to say to Larry doesnt appear to be of much
importance to him.

I have build and installed the Realtek driver
(92ce_se_de_linux_mac80211_0005.1230.2011.tar.gz) and im getting *11*
wifi networks against *3* wifi networks detected if using the driver
from latest kernel (version 3.3.5).
I know what Larry said but the differences are obvious and many, so
the fix that was commited in rtl8192ce maybe needs to be reviewed,
will someone listen please?

Before that patch, when the device scanned after the connection was up and 
running, it set the gain very low. When that happened, the receiver failed to 
see any info coming from the AP. The AP would retry several times, and then cut 
its transmit rate to 1 Mbps. That rate would stay until rtl8192xe was unloaded 
and reloaded. To me, that is a lot bigger problem that what you are seeing, 
which is why I will not change it back!

That in fact used to happen severall times, if the wifi network was
not near enough it would be hard to connect to it, and if this patch
fixes its good knews in a way, but its not very good to loose the
ability to check wifi networks, but if you didnt find a better
intermediate point between loosing the wifi force and have better
connection its not me whos going to say otherwise, your the expert
here :)

But what happens now is that in NetworkManager i can see 3 wifi
networks, but if i run kismet or airodump-ng, it
can detect wifi networks that do not appear listed in NM.

Ok i have been using only kernel-3.3.4 (with compat wireless) and i
have been seeing a strange behaviour, it starts by detecting for
example 6 wifi networks and passed some time the 6 wifi become 1, and
passed a litle longer NetworkManager reaches the point of not showing
any Wifi network.
Then i restart wpa_supplicant and i get back 3 wifi networks.

With kernel-3.3.1 i dont remember this ever happened...

In this notebook clevo W150HRM (with a reatek card: rtl8192ce       :
Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.|RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter
[NETWORK_OTHER] (vendor:10ec device:8176 subv:10ec subd:9196) (rev:
01) ),  runing kernel-3.3.4 with compat-wireless currently
NetworkManager is not detecting any wifi network.

And in notebook clevo M761SU (with a Realtek card 8187B), running
Windows 7 Ultimate, it detects 6 wifi networks.

Now if i run in clevo W150HRM the kernel-3.3.1 it will detect the same
6 wifi networks that are detected in clevo M761SU running Windows 7.

Is the fix http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=commit;h=eb641120479de7ee703fabb5e6ee0ec7947474ba
an improvement? Or would it need some more tweaks, since i have turned
the notebook clevo W150HRM it started by detecting 6 wifi networks,
than passed to 3, then passed to 1, and now is detecting none.

I know i have been insisting on this but its because i cant see here
an improvement with last fix (just not to mention the problem with
keyboard and mouse where i had to turn off power management), i just
hope that my interventions can be seen as a try to improve things and
not as criticizing anyone work.
