Dear all,

I am using the carl9170 interface from the 2.6.39.2 kernel with the
newest carl9170 firmware. I have set-up an AP with hostapd. Everything
is working so far:

I am now trying to create an additional virtual intereface to connect
wireless to my router as described on:

http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Documentation/iw/vif/

with
iw dev wlan0 interface add wlan1 type station

However, ifconfig does not list the additional wlan1 interface. According to

http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/carl9170#Multiple_Interfaces

this should be supported. What am I doing wrong? Any additional logs
etc. required to investigate?

sorry for bothering you again (thank you very much for your quick answers!!!)

I am quite new to this and don't know how to bring this up to connect
to my router (with WPA2 encryption). ifup does not work:

ifup wlan1-wlan0
Ignoring unknown interface wlan1-wlan0=wlan1-wlan0.

Could you be so kind as to point me in the right direction?

be careful there.
The device has only one radio and there's no channel manager.
As soon as the station is up, it will start scanning and this
takes the AP out-of-order...

OK, I will set hostapd to use the same channel as my router (my router
is on channel 3).
So I will use "channel=3" in hostapd.conf

What do I need to do to connect to the router with the virtual interface?

Any idea?

Just start/up the interface and try again...
this can be done by ip link or ifconfig.

However, iw connect only works with unencrypted or WEP
networks. Getting it to work with wpa_supplicant is
more tricky since you'll have to disable scanning
completely.

Hi Alex,

did you get this to work? I'm using the same driver and procedure, but when
I try to bring up the second interface (with ifup wifi1), I get the error
device or resource busy... The first always comes up.
I don't know if vif is enabled by default on the kernelmodule. I tried to
compile it by myself (there is an option for the number of vif, and the
default is 1), but stuck on errors or missing dependencies, yet.

The virtual interface might not be listed because it can't be
