I've a different problem with wireless that Johannes is investigating
for me on linux-wireless; but here's a patch that he pointed me to
along the way, didn't help my issue but I expect it will help yours...

Subject: cfg80211: don't set privacy w/o key

When wpa_supplicant is used to connect to open networks,
it causes the wdev->wext.keys to point to key memory, but
that key memory is all empty. Only use privacy when there
is a default key to be used.

At least iwmc3200wifi is in 2.6.31.

All:
I have a large group that uses the ssb module along with the Broadcom
4318, in a CF form factor. If the CF card is inserted before boot, and
the ssb module is not in the initrd process, the laptops lock up and do
not become operational. The solution to this problem is/was adding the
ssb.ko to the initrd process. So I agree with Luis on this, the ssb
module will have to be added/updated to the initrd process. As for PCI
operations, I don't know, but for PCMCIA operations ssb.ko has to be
added and/or updated. Anytime I am testing new releases of b43, I run
"update-initramfs -u" to update the ssb module. (Sometimes you can do a
rmmod ssb and rmmod b43, and then modprobe them back in. - This saves a
reboot)

Thanks

* Unable to create an 802.11s mesh using compat-wireless-2009-09-27
From: Simon Raffeiner @ 2009-09-27 13:41 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-wireless

Hello List,

I built todays compat-wireless (compat-wireless-2009-09-27) on two different
Ubuntu machines:

- kernel 2.6.28-15-generic i686 using rt73usb
- kernel 2.6.31-11-generic x86_64 using ath5k (AR2425)

and tried to create an 802.11s Mesh following the HOWTO - unsuccessfully:

root@ion:/home/sturmflut# export MESH_IFACE=mesh
root@ion:/home/sturmflut# export MESH_ID=test
root@ion:/home/sturmflut# iw dev wlan0 interface add $MESH_IFACE type mp
mesh_id $MESH_ID

root@ion:/home/sturmflut# ifconfig -a | grep mesh
mesh Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:22:75:50:13:c2

root@ion:/home/sturmflut# ifconfig $MESH_IFACE up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Name not unique on network

if I remove wlan0 the mesh device can be brought up through ifconfig:

root@ion:/home/sturmflut# iw dev wlan0 del
root@ion:/home/sturmflut# ifconfig $MESH_IFACE up

The strange thing is that iwconfig lists the interface as Mode "Auto"
immediately after it is added:

root@ion:/home/sturmflut# iwconfig mesh
mesh IEEE 802.11bg Mode:Auto Tx-Power=11 dBm
          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:on

and falls back to "Managed" after about five seconds:

root@ion:/home/sturmflut# iwconfig mesh
mesh IEEE 802.11bg Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated
          Tx-Power=11 dBm
          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:on

Symptoms are identical on both machines. I remember this working some weeks
ago, at least using the ath5k driver, and without any "Name not unique on
network" errors.

I could try with a full wireless-testing.git checkout but I doubt anything
will change, Ubuntus 2.6.31-11-generic is quite recent and all relevant
modules should have been overwritten by those in compat-wireless.

regards,
Simon Raffeiner

nope I don't get a Reason 6 disconnect...

(I get a reason 3 local choice, but that's true for working and
non-working both)

Did You have similar messages in dmesg like this:

(use WPA)
?

I try make sure, that that result of my bisection is correct.

From: Arjan van de Ven @ 2009-09-27 13:18 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: netdev; +Cc: linux-kernel, linux-wireless

Hi,

With todays git my laptop fails to associate with my access point.
Bisection points to the commit below, and reverting this one commit on
the HEAD of tree also fixes the issue, so I'm pretty confident that this
commit is to blame.

I have a 4965 wifi card in my laptop, and the network I'm trying to
connect to has no encryption. I'm running Fedora 11 as OS.

I would like to kindly request for this commit to be reverted until a
more permanent solution is found (I'm happy to test any patches)..

    cfg80211: don't overwrite privacy setting

When cfg80211 is instructed to connect, it always
uses the default WEP key for the privacy setting,
which clearly is wrong when using wpa_supplicant.
Don't overwrite the setting, and rely on it being
false when wpa_supplicant is not running, instead
set it to true when we have keys.

Curious. I found the problem, but maybe nobody else complaining before
you means we can get rid of CONFIG_WIRELESS_EXT_SYSFS quicker than I
thought ;)

Will post a fix later today.

* [RFC/RFT v4] wext: refactor
From: Johannes Berg @ 2009-09-27 11:13 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: linux-wireless
In-Reply-To: <1253967589.5122.11.camel@johannes.local>

Refactor wext to
 * split out iwpriv handling
 * split out iwspy handling
 * split out procfs support
 * allow cfg80211 to have wireless extensions compat code
   w/o CONFIG_WIRELESS_EXT

After this, drivers need to
 - select WIRELESS_EXT	- for wext support
 - select WEXT_PRIV	- for iwpriv support
 - select WEXT_SPY	- for iwspy support

except cfg80211 -- which gets new hooks in wext-core.c
and can then get wext handlers without CONFIG_WIRELESS_EXT.

Wireless extensions procfs support is auto-selected
based on PROC_FS and anything that requires the wext core
(i.e. WIRELESS_EXT or CFG80211_WEXT).

- *	o Move /proc/net/wireless stuff from net/core/dev.c to here
- *	o Make Wireless Extension IOCTLs go through here
- *	o Added iw_handler handling ;-)
- *	o Added standard ioctl description
- *	o Initial dumb commit strategy based on orinoco.c
- *
- * v3 - 19.12.01 - Jean II
- *	o Make sure we don't go out of standard_ioctl[] in ioctl_standard_call
- *	o Add event dispatcher function
- *	o Add event description
- *	o Propagate events as rtnetlink IFLA_WIRELESS option
- *	o Generate event on selected SET requests
- *
- * v4 - 18.04.02 - Jean II
- *	o Fix stupid off by one in iw_ioctl_description : IW_ESSID_MAX_SIZE + 1
- *
- * v5 - 21.06.02 - Jean II
- *	o Add IW_PRIV_TYPE_ADDR in priv_type_size (+cleanup)
- *	o Reshuffle IW_HEADER_TYPE_XXX to map IW_PRIV_TYPE_XXX changes
- *	o Add IWEVCUSTOM for driver specific event/scanning token
- *	o Turn on WE_STRICT_WRITE by default + kernel warning
- *	o Fix WE_STRICT_WRITE in ioctl_export_private() (32 => iw_num)
- *	o Fix off-by-one in test (extra_size <= IFNAMSIZ)
- *
- * v6 - 9.01.03 - Jean II
- *	o Add common spy support : iw_handler_set_spy(), wireless_spy_update()
- *	o Add enhanced spy support : iw_handler_set_thrspy() and event.
- *	o Add WIRELESS_EXT version display in /proc/net/wireless
- *
- * v6 - 18.06.04 - Jean II
- *	o Change get_spydata() method for added safety
- *	o Remove spy #ifdef, they are always on -> cleaner code
- *	o Allow any size GET request if user specifies length > max
- * and if request has IW_DESCR_FLAG_NOMAX flag or is SIOCGIWPRIV
- *	o Start migrating get_wireless_stats to struct iw_handler_def
- *	o Add wmb() in iw_handler_set_spy() for non-coherent archs/cpus
- * Based on patch from Pavel Roskin <proski@gnu.org> :
- *	o Fix kernel data leak to user space in private handler handling
- *
- * v7 - 18.3.05 - Jean II
- *	o Remove (struct iw_point *)->pointer from events and streams
- *	o Remove spy_offset from struct iw_handler_def

- *	o If IW_QUAL_DBM is set, show dBm values in /proc/net/wireless
- *	o Don't lose INVALID/DBM flags when clearing UPDATED flags (iwstats)
- *
- * v8 - 17.02.06 - Jean II
- *	o RtNetlink requests support (SET/GET)

That appears to be the problem, though I wonder why that is. I'll look
into it.

I suppose (together with some of the newly added printk you mentioned
could be removed in the final version) the dmesg messages are somewhat
confusing, because as a user, I would rather have a deauth message
that's actually associated with a user action (e.g. if I switch AP or
rfkill). Is it possible to distinguish situation where a user action
is involved versus one that isn't? or is the distinction between any
consequence of 'user-action' vs wpa_supplicant doing-it-on-its-own too
much buried down in the layers?

Yes - I meant Albert - wpa_spplicant runs directly probably behaves a
little differently from NM starting/stopping it.

* [PATCH] mac80211_hwsim: Fix initial beacon timer configuration
From: Jouni Malinen @ 2009-09-26 19:30 UTC (permalink / raw)
  To: John W. Linville; +Cc: linux-wireless

mac80211_hwsim does not start transmitting Beacon frames when hostapd
is started for the first time and restarting hostapd fixes this. The
issue is caused by the config() handler not being able to start
beacon_timer when beacon interval is not yet known and
bss_info_changed() handler not starting the timer. This can be fixed by
making the bss_info_changed() update the timer.

That should only be showing up if virtual wiphys are used. In this case,
it should not really be showing up and is likely indicating a bug
somewhere (ath9k or mac80211). I don't know how to reproduce this
easily, so I have not looked into more details yet. It would be
interesting to add printk calls into ath9k_sw_scan_start() and
ath9k_sw_scan_complete() just after the mutex_lock() call to figure out
whether mac80211 ends up calling sw_scan_start() driver handler twice in
a row which would be one possible way to get this triggered. The other
way to hit this would be if ath9k were to somehow not update aphy->state
correctly when the scan has been completed.

* [PATCH 3/9] Add bound checks in wext for copy_from_user

Subject: [PATCH 3/9] Add bound checks in wext for copy_from_user
CC: linux-wireless@vger.kernel.org

The wireless extensions have a copy_from_user to a local stack
array "essid", but both me and gcc have failed to find where
the bounds for this copy are located in the code.

This patch adds some basic sanity checks for the copy length
to make sure that we don't overflow the stack buffer.

That looks fine to me and should be applied.

Git snapshot of hostapd is now removing the STA entry (if one exists)
when processing reassociation. The combination of these two changes
allows the reassociation back to the same AP to be completed even if the
STA was in PS mode.

FWIW, the current version of NetworkManager used by the KDE 3.5
desktop in openSUSE 11.1 works, as does the Gnome version. There have
been problems with KDE4.2 and earlier, but 4.3 works.

I have been testing openSUSE 11.2. As of Milestone 7, wireless
networking works with KDE and Gnome in both i386 and x86_64
architectures. I have also tested networks with no encryption, WEP,
WPA TKIP, and WPA2 TKIP.

My inclination is to set wired connections with ifplugd, but wireless
to "on boot".

But it's nicer if they are there, I'd recommend keeping them.

I do have CONFIG_WIRELESS_EXT_SYSFS=y,
and I do have /sys/class/net/wlan0/ containing various things,
but I don't have any /sys/class/net/wlan0/wireless with recent kernels.

No, ifplugd was my choice: IIRC, at some stage of installation you're
given a choice between traditional ifplugd and super new NetworkManager:
my choice has been ifplugd (after being somehow burnt by NetworkManager
once in the past).

Thanks a lot for going to this trouble - though I do realize it's not
all just for me! My guess is the LiveCD will favour NetworkManager
(if that turns out to make any difference).

Good idea: I just tried that, and things indeed then work fine.

just as a differnt datapoint:

My current 2.6.27 based on the ubuntu kernel with a compat-wireless-2.6
from yesterday (which works without problems for me with intel 3945)
does not have this subdir either, it just does not exist at all.
(there is a phy80211 symlink, but no "wireless")

Hi Tim,

I have decompressed initrd.img-2.6.31-11-generic from karmic and
initrd.img-2.6.28-15-generic form jaunty. In both packages I found the
ssb.ko and b44.ko module.

It appears that just uses
	test -d /sys/class/net/wlan0/wireless

but that should be ok, unless that's actually a link now for some reason
-- can you verify what happens there? And double-check you have
CONFIG_WIRELESS_EXT_SYSFS please, the config you sent me did have it

Excellent, that shows the driver name easily enough. Thanks.

Heh, fun.

Well the problem appears to be that wpa_supplicant isn't getting started
by your distro any more. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with opensuse.
It seems it thinks the device isn't wireless but wired, since it starts
ifplugd. OTOH maybe it wants ifplugd for wireless too? It's possible in
theory.

I'm downloading a livecd to figure out what might be going wrong.

Can you try running wpa_supplicant manually to make sure it's a problem
in the distro/kernel interaction and not in wpa_supplicant/kernel?

It works here - I would guess the packets are getting dropped.
Do you have anything in 'dmesg' while trying to associate?

Can you point to such a discussion? It's best to discuss on ath5k-devel
or linux-wireless ML so we will know about it.
