you are beating me to it. I can only second that this is a good idea for
the dev type assignment. Once Dave acks this I can sent a rebased patch
for the dev type stuff for WiFi.

Thanks for letting me know - I had a better thought at that (or
rather, a big bundle where it came from) - It probably worked around
some bug in 2.22 which has since been fixed. I haven't heard from the
person where this came from why he did what he did, but just as well,
I guess. It served a purpose during the 2.22 period.

* [PATCH 2/2] cfg80211: fix wireless handlers assignment

The point we assign dev->wireless_handlers at is too
late, we need to do that before netdev_register_kobject()
gets called, so use the new NETDEV_PRE_INIT notifier.
The result of adding wireless_handlers too late is the
disappearance of /sys/class/net/wlan0/wireless which a
bunch of distro scripts still require.

I've a different problem with wireless that Johannes is investigating
for me on linux-wireless; but here's a patch that he pointed me to
along the way, didn't help my issue but I expect it will help yours...


Subject: cfg80211: don't set privacy w/o key

When wpa_supplicant is used to connect to open networks,
it causes the wdev->wext.keys to point to key memory, but
that key memory is all empty. Only use privacy when there
is a default key to be used.

I have a large group that uses the ssb module along with the Broadcom 
4318, in a CF form factor. If the CF card is inserted before boot, and 
the ssb module is not in the initrd process, the laptops lock up and do 
not become operational. The solution to this problem is/was adding the 
ssb.ko to the initrd process. So I agree with Luis on this, the ssb 
module will have to be added/updated to the initrd process. As for PCI 
operations, I don't know, but for PCMCIA operations ssb.ko has to be 
added and/or updated. Anytime I am testing new releases of b43, I run 
"update-initramfs -u" to update the ssb module. (Sometimes you can do a 
rmmod ssb and rmmod b43, and then modprobe them back in. - This saves a 
reboot)

Hello List,

I built todays compat-wireless (compat-wireless-2009-09-27) on two different 
Ubuntu machines:

- kernel 2.6.28-15-generic i686 using rt73usb
- kernel 2.6.31-11-generic x86_64 using ath5k (AR2425)

and tried to create an 802.11s Mesh following the HOWTO - unsuccessfully:

SIOCSIFFLAGS: Name not unique on network

if I remove wlan0 the mesh device can be brought up through ifconfig:

root@ion:/home/sturmflut# iw dev wlan0 del
root@ion:/home/sturmflut# ifconfig $MESH_IFACE up

The strange thing is that iwconfig lists the interface as Mode "Auto" 
immediately after it is added:

root@ion:/home/sturmflut# iwconfig mesh
mesh      IEEE 802.11bg  Mode:Auto  Tx-Power=11 dBm
          Retry  long limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:on

and falls back to "Managed" after about five seconds:

root@ion:/home/sturmflut# iwconfig mesh
mesh      IEEE 802.11bg  Mode:Managed  Access Point: Not-Associated
          Tx-Power=11 dBm
          Retry  long limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:on

Symptoms are identical on both machines. I remember this working some weeks 
ago, at least using the ath5k driver, and without any "Name not unique on 
network" errors.

I could try with a full wireless-testing.git checkout but I doubt anything 
will change, Ubuntus 2.6.31-11-generic is quite recent and all relevant 
modules should have been overwritten by those in compat-wireless.

(I get a reason 3 local choice, but that's true for working and
non-working both)

Curious. I found the problem, but maybe nobody else complaining before
you means we can get rid of CONFIG_WIRELESS_EXT_SYSFS quicker than I

 * split out iwpriv handling
 * split out iwspy handling
 * split out procfs support
 * allow cfg80211 to have wireless extensions compat code
   w/o CONFIG_WIRELESS_EXT

After this, drivers need to
 - select WIRELESS_EXT	- for wext support
 - select WEXT_PRIV	- for iwpriv support
 - select WEXT_SPY	- for iwspy support

except cfg80211 -- which gets new hooks in wext-core.c
and can then get wext handlers without CONFIG_WIRELESS_EXT.

Wireless extensions procfs support is auto-selected
based on PROC_FS and anything that requires the wext core
(i.e. WIRELESS_EXT or CFG80211_WEXT).

I suppose (together with some of the newly added printk you mentioned
could be removed in the final version) the dmesg messages are somewhat
confusing, because as a user, I would rather have a deauth message
that's actually associated with a user action (e.g. if I switch AP or
rfkill). Is it possible to distinguish situation where a user action
is involved versus one that isn't? or is the distinction between any
consequence of 'user-action' vs wpa_supplicant doing-it-on-its-own too
much buried down in the layers?

* [PATCH] mac80211_hwsim: Fix initial beacon timer configuration

mac80211_hwsim does not start transmitting Beacon frames when hostapd
is started for the first time and restarting hostapd fixes this. The
issue is caused by the config() handler not being able to start
beacon_timer when beacon interval is not yet known and
bss_info_changed() handler not starting the timer. This can be fixed by
making the bss_info_changed() update the timer.

That should only be showing up if virtual wiphys are used. In this case,
it should not really be showing up and is likely indicating a bug
somewhere (ath9k or mac80211). I don't know how to reproduce this
easily, so I have not looked into more details yet. It would be
interesting to add printk calls into ath9k_sw_scan_start() and
ath9k_sw_scan_complete() just after the mutex_lock() call to figure out
whether mac80211 ends up calling sw_scan_start() driver handler twice in
a row which would be one possible way to get this triggered. The other
way to hit this would be if ath9k were to somehow not update aphy->state
correctly when the scan has been completed.

array "essid", but both me and gcc have failed to find where
the bounds for this copy are located in the code.

This patch adds some basic sanity checks for the copy length
to make sure that we don't overflow the stack buffer.
