* [PATCH 1/2] mwifiex: dispatch/rotate from reorder table atomically

mwifiex_11n_scan_and_dispatch() and
mwifiex_11n_dispatch_pkt_until_start_win() share similar patterns, where
they perform a few different actions on the same table, using the same
lock, but non-atomically. There have been other attempts to clean up
this sort of behavior, but they have had problems (incomplete;
introducing new deadlocks).
We can improve these functions' atomicity by queueing up our RX packets
in a list, to dispatch at the end of the function. This avoids problems
of another operation modifying the table in between our dispatch and
rotation operations.
This was inspired by investigations around this:
http://lkml.kernel.org/linux-wireless/20181130175957.167031-1-briannorris@chromium.org
Subject: [4.20 PATCH] Revert "mwifiex: restructure rx_reorder_tbl_lock usage"
While the original (now-reverted) patch had good intentions in
restructuring some of the locking patterns in this driver, it missed an
important detail: we cannot defer to softirq contexts while already in
an atomic context. We can help avoid this sort of problem by separating
the two steps of:
(1) iterating / clearing the mwifiex reordering table
(2) dispatching received packets to upper layers
This makes it much harder to make lock recursion mistakes, as these
two steps no longer need to hold the same locks.
Testing: I've played with a variety of stress tests, including download
stress tests on the same APs which caught regressions with commit
5188d5453bc9 ("mwifiex: restructure rx_reorder_tbl_lock usage"). I've
primarily tested on Marvell 8997 / PCIe, although I've given 8897 / SDIO
a quick spin as well.

* [PATCH 2/2] mwifiex: don't disable hardirqs; just softirqs
From: Brian Norris @ 2019-06-04 20:53 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Ganapathi Bhat, Nishant Sarmukadam, Amitkumar Karwar, Xinming Hu
Cc: linux-kernel, linux-wireless, Doug Anderson, Brian Norris
In-Reply-To: <20190604205323.200361-1-briannorris@chromium.org>
main_proc_lock and int_lock (in mwifiex_adapter) are the only spinlocks
used in hardirq contexts. The rest are only in task or softirq contexts.
Convert every other lock from *_irq{save,restore}() variants to _bh()
variants.
This is a mechanical transformation of all spinlock usage in mwifiex
using the following:
Step 1:
I ran this nasty sed script:
sed -i -E '/spin_lock_irqsave|spin_unlock_irqrestore/ {
/main_proc_lock|int_lock/! {
s:(spin_(un|)lock)_irq(save|restore):\1_bh: ;
# Join broken lines.
:a /;$/! {
N;
s/\s*\n\s*//;
ba
}
/,.*\);$/ s:,.*\):\):
}
}' drivers/net/wireless/marvell/mwifiex/*
Step 2:
Apply this semantic patch (coccinelle) to remove the unused 'flags'
variables:
// <smpl>
@@
type T;
identifier i;
@@
(
extern T i;
|
- T i;
... when != i
)
// </smpl>

* LPC 2019 Networking Track CFP
From: David Miller @ 2019-06-04 18:05 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: netdev, daniel; +Cc: linux-wireless, netfilter-devel, bpf, linux-kernel, lwn
This is a call for proposals for the 3 day networking track at the
Linux Plumbers Conference in Lisbon, which will be happening on
September 9th-11th, 2019.
We are seeking talks of 40 minutes in length (including Q & A),
optionally accompanied by papers of 2 to 10 pages in length. The
papers, while not required, are very strongly encouraged by the
committee. The submitters intention to provide a paper will be taken
into consideration as a criteria when deciding which proposals to
accept.
Any kind of advanced networking-related topic will be considered.
Please submit your proposals on the LPC website at:
https://www.linuxplumbersconf.org/event/4/abstracts/#submit-abstract
And be sure to select "Networking Summit Track" in the Track pulldown
menu.
Proposals must be submitted by August 2nd, and submitters will be
notified of acceptance by August 9th.
Final slides and papers (as PDF) are due on September 2nd.

* [PATCH V5 2/2] ath10k: add tx hw 802.11 encapusaltion offloading suppor
From: John Crispin @ 2019-06-04 17:59 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Johannes Berg, Kalle Valo
Cc: linux-wireless, ath10k, Vasanthakumar Thiagarajan,
Shashidhar Lakkavalli, John Crispin
In-Reply-To: <20190604175900.26818-1-john@phrozen.org>
From: Vasanthakumar Thiagarajan <vthiagar@qti.qualcomm.com>
This patch adds support for ethernet rxtx mode to the driver. The feature
is enabled via a new module parameter. If enabled to driver will enable
the feature on a per vif basis if all other requirements were met.
Testing on a IPQ4019 based hardware shows a increase in TCP throughput
of ~20% when the feature is enabled.

* [PATCH V5 1/2] mac80211: add hw 80211 encapsulation offloading support
From: John Crispin @ 2019-06-04 17:58 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Johannes Berg, Kalle Valo
Cc: linux-wireless, ath10k, Vasanthakumar Thiagarajan,
Shashidhar Lakkavalli, John Crispin
In-Reply-To: <20190604175900.26818-1-john@phrozen.org>
From: Vasanthakumar Thiagarajan <vthiagar@qti.qualcomm.com>
This patch adds a new transmit path for hardware that supports 802.11
encapsulation offloading. In those cases 802.3a frames get passed
directly to the driver allowing to hardware to handle the encapsulation.
Certain features wont work and the patch masks these out.
* monitor interfaces are not supported if any of the vif is in encap mode.
* amsdu/non-linear frames wont work in encap offloading mode.
* TKIP countermeasures cannot be triggered and hence encap is disabled
when TKIP is setup.
The patch defines a secondary netdev_ops struct that is assigned to the
device if 802.11 encap support is available and enabled. The driver
needs to enable the support on a per vif basis if it finds that all
pre-reqs are meet.

* [PATCH V5 0/2] mac80211: add 802.11 encapsulation offloading
From: John Crispin @ 2019-06-04 17:58 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Johannes Berg, Kalle Valo; +Cc: linux-wireless, ath10k, John Crispin
This series picks up prior work from QCA. The patch is currently shipped
inside QSDK as part of the wlan-open package.
The series tries to address all feedback from the V2
-> https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/9602585/
Changes in V3
* rebase on latest kernel
* various code style clean ups
* give some of the variables and functions more obvious names
* move the code that disables support for non-linear frames to the core
* disable monitor and tkip support
Changes in V4
* disable encap when TKIP is used instead of refusing TKIP
* use a flag inside tx_info instead of an extra element
* move 4addr detection into ieee80211_set_hw_80211_encap()
* ieee80211_tx_dequeue() was dropping out to early
Changes in V5
* implement comments from Johannes
Vasanthakumar Thiagarajan (2):

* [PATCH] mwifiex: print PCI mmap with %pK
From: Brian Norris @ 2019-06-04 17:31 UTC (permalink / raw)
To: Ganapathi Bhat, Nishant Sarmukadam, Amitkumar Karwar, Xinming Hu
Cc: linux-kernel, linux-wireless, Brian Norris
Unadorned '%p' has restrictive policies these days, such that it usually
just prints garbage at early boot (see
Documentation/core-api/printk-formats.rst, "kernel will print
``(ptrval)`` until it gathers enough entropy"). Annotating with %pK
(for "kernel pointer") allows the kptr_restrict sysctl to control
printing policy better.
We might just as well drop this message entirely, but this fix was easy
enough for now.

That is indeed an issue I recall resulting in -110 errors.

Knowing that will be a good start.

Any chance I can convince you to provide some official tags like
Reviewed-by or Tested-by on the revert?

I'm not sure there's any single magic commit I can point to. When I
started working on dw_mmc it was terrible at handling error cases and
would often crash / hang / stop all future communication upon certain
classes or efforts. There were dozens of problems we've had to fix
over the years. These problems showed up when we started supporting
HS200 / UHS since the tuning phase really stress the error handling of
the host controller.
I searched and by the time we were supporting Broadcom SDIO cards the
error handling was already pretty good. ...but if we hadn't already
made the error handling more robust for UHS tuning then we would have
definitely hit these types of problems. The only problem I remember
having to solve in dw_mmc that was unique to Broadcom was commit
0bdbd0e88cf6 ("mmc: dw_mmc: Don't start commands while busy"). Any
chance that could be what you're hitting?
What host controller are you having problems with?

That's an option. I only fear that the revisit part never happens

If I not able to come up with something within a week, then I will

Since the commit 29f6589140a1 ("brcmfmac: disable command decode in
sdio_aos") causes the regression on other SD card controller, it is
better to revert it as you mentioned.

I am really pleased to see you're investigating some of these issues,
since I've been pretty swamped and not had time to work on this driver
for a long time.
The firmware should allow for two rate modes, either firmware handled or
controlled by the driver. Ideally we would want the driver to handle it,
but I never was able to make that work reliable.
This fix should at least improve the situation, and it may explain some
of the performance issues with the 8192eu as well?

I always hated the wireless_mode nonsense in the realtek driver, but
maybe we cannot avoid it :(

Unless you have time to help dig into all the possibilities here to
help understand how this should behave across all the different host
controllers / wakeup setups, maybe we could just land ${SUBJECT} patch
for now and when there is more clarity we can revisit?

This series attempts to deal better with the expected transmission
errors that we get when waking up (from idle) the SDIO-based WiFi on
rk3288-veyron-minnie, rk3288-veyron-speedy, and rk3288-veyron-mickey.
Some details about those errors can be found in
<https://crbug.com/960222>, but to summarize it here: if we try to
send the wakeup command to the WiFi card at the same time it has
decided to wake up itself then it will behave badly on the SDIO bus.
This can cause timeouts or CRC errors.
When I tested on 4.19 and 4.20 these CRC errors can be seen to cause
re-tuning. Since I am currently developing on 4.19 this was the
original problem I attempted to solve.
On mainline it turns out that you don't see the retuning errors but
you see tons of spam about timeouts trying to wakeup from sleep. I
tracked down the commit that was causing that and have partially
reverted it here. I have no real knowledge about Broadcom WiFi, but
the commit that was causing problems sounds (from the descriptioin) to
be a hack commit penalizing all Broadcom WiFi users because of a bug
in a Cypress SD controller. I will let others comment if this is
truly the case and, if so, what the right solution should be.
There wasn't a good resolution on v1 and it's been a while, so I'm
sending out a v2. Other than changing patch #1 to a full revert, the
only other changes here are just to the patch descriptions.
Changes in v2:
- A full revert, not just a partial one (Arend). ...with explicit Cc.
- Updated commit message to clarify based on discussion of v1.
