Someone that sends what looks like a business letter to an individual, by name, to a list mail address, showing that he doesn't know what that list is about, is suspect. He is either daft, or it was mass email, not really targeted. By passing along the spam, the mailing list is adding some legitimacy to the message in the eyes of most spam filters.
