Apparently this is an iBook specific issue, then, because I tried exactly

between the trackpad on the Pismo and on the iBook? It's not like ADB isn't
working: the keyboard works fine, so ADB is working at least mostly fine.
Like
I said, I use an external trackball anyway, but I'm sure somebody will be
angry
about this at some point...

Nelson I didn't really follow that description. Ben's web page clearly
lists:

      su -
      cd /dev
      rm usbmouse
      rm mouse
      mkdir input
      mknod input/mice c 13 63
      ln -s input/mice mouse
      ln -s input/mice usbmouse

In the end, /dev/mouse and /dev/usbmouse are links to /dev/input/mice.
This is not the same as what you described above...

Yes, I followed them exactly. Like I said, external usb mice work fine, and
the internal adb keyboard works fine, but the trackpad (also adb) doesn't
work at all. I tried gpm -m /dev/mouse -t imps2 and several variations
thereof, but nothing worked. The trackpad is detected correctly by the
kernel, according to dmesg. There are no errors reported of any kind, the
trackpad simply does nothing.

Can you please post the dmesg part where all the ADB/USB devices get
registered to inputs? And please also the line which contains "adb devices"
in the dmesg and your kernel .config.

All looks fine..., no idea what's going wrong for you. A new binary kernel
will be on Ben's page in a hour or so, please try that one.

Hmm, what procedure do you use to compile the kernel? If you use Ben's
.config unchanged (no make config/xconfig/menuconfig), it should look like
that:

  make oldconfig dep clean vmlinux modules modules_install

Well, I've been using Linux on x86 for a couple of years now, so I usually
do this:

make xconfig (or menuconfig, depending on mood)
Change settings around (but this time I followed directions carefully on
what needed to be enabled)
make dep
make clean
make vmlinux
etc

I'll try the new kernel later this evening, when I get home from win-work.

OK, I've tried it. No function from the trackpad still. I downloaded the
sources and recompiled. Still no trackpad. I turned off "Enable new input
layer" and make dep'd make clean make vmlinux etc and *still* no trackpad!
I'm on the Yellow Dog list, and people are starting to report similar
problems with 2000 "Pismo" PowerBooks and these kernels...

What's up if you add "adb_xpmac_compat" to your kernel command line ? It
works fine on my pismo here.

What I wrote can be a bit confusing. I meant:

 - The new layer will create new devices that mix all mice (including
trackpad) and route them to the new /dev/input/mice device. Of course,
you need to create this device (with mknod) and eventually link /dev/
mouse, /dev/adbmouse and /dev/usbmouse (yes, all 3 of them) to /dev/
input/mice. There are some explanation on how to do that on my page.
Those will output imps2 protocol.

 - The latest kernel (pre10-ben1) will keep the old /dev/adbmouse device
alive. That means that if you don't set /dev/adbmouse to point to the new
/dev/input/mice but instead keep it to it's old major/minor, you'll still
get a busmouse-like device on /dev/adbmouse

 - I also added this new "adb_xpmac_compat" kernel command line option
(at least until Xpmac is fixed). With this, the driver will, by default,
enable sending of ADB mouse moves as fake keycodes to the console, like
MkLinux, in a way compatible with Xpmac. The new driver won't do it any
more unless you use that option or your do

echo "1" >/proc/sys/dev/mac_hid/adb_mouse_sends_keycodes

Right, did that, and usbmice work fine. No, I made sure /dev/adbmouse still

In theory, but it isn't working that way. Or, at least, *something* isn't
working... I'm not lying here, the trackpad really isn't working :)

I tried both using the kernel command line and/or setting this /proc flag,
but nothing works, in any combination. Sorry to seem... I don't know,
annoying (if I do) but this is a rather important bug to fix, I'd say...

Hmmm... no dice on this iBook SE. Still not working, even with that command.
So, there appears to be some difference in this respect between the Pismo
and the iBook (at least, the Special Edition iBook... but I'm pretty sure
the SE is exactly the same as the normal iBook, except for color and the
366...), and perhaps even between different Pismo's.

I have a Pismo here. It has a trackpad. The trackpad works, both in gpm
and in XF4, with the new input layer stuff. Both programs are set to use
protocol "IMPS/2". Both programs use /dev/mouse, which is a symlink to
/dev/input/mice, which is a device with major 13 minor 63.

Your problem after disabling the new input layer is most likely because
/dev/mouse is still a symlink to the new input layer device; you can't
have it both ways.

If the precompiled kernel doesn't work that suggests there's something
wrong in your configuration, like your /dev setup or the protocol that X
and gpm are expecting or the device X and gpm are reading from.
