Subject: how to do:root filesystem on flash?

Dear all,
    I use uboot2.0 and linux-2.4.4 running on my own board(mpc860t, 2M
flash).
    Now i can booting linux use nfs root filesystem, and i want use romfs
instead it, how should i do? Need format flash first?
