I put some new installer images for chrp/pmac/prep at
ftp://ftp.ppc.kernel.org/pub/linuxppc/install/
Several people were asking for them to fix some problems. Please give them
a try.

Unfortunately I had to use R4 because I couldn't get preR5 to install after
many tries with all kind of variations. The only problem I had with R4 was
when I went into package selection and click on "base" (the last package) I
got a SEGV 11. I also had a bit of problem getting BootX Extension to
correctly pass the root device as an argument... it ended up as 00:00
several times until I actually booted into MacOS, changed the setting with
the BootX App, and saved the prefs. Shame I couldn't install preR5 on this
spare machine though.
Anyways, I noticed R4 is using kernel 2.1.125 which is nice. It means
modutils and a bunch of other packages are up to date for the 2.2.x series.
Are there any other packages I should update? Anyone try 2.2.3-ac4 yet (I
probably will this week)?

I've tried it yesterday, using a modified R4 (the one I got in august 98). I
Also use modutils 2.1.125.
I've got some difficulties to make it boot (first scsi disk not syncing) but
I've finally got it running. The two main problems which still prevent me from
using it as my main kernel are :
Some modules have undefined symbol ("memcpy" for most of them), some
are ok (hfs, loop) Dmasound won't be loaded :-( while soundcore will
The vmode I do in /etc/rc.d/rc doesn't seem to be done, making
my kde to boot in a much too bad screen resolution. (but it works if I do it by
hand later, ?)
A little funny bug, is that the screen #1 isn't refreshed when swapping
console from X.
info about the problem with disk1 not syncing can be found on
http://www.ecoledoc.lip6.fr/~capricel/coding/kernel222.html
It's probably due to the fact that the box is a PowerMac 7600 with the OF bug.
If anybody is interested in more details, just ask.

Let's see if I can manage to give anything of any use :)
I have a UMAC c500 PPC 603e 240MHz
When I boot the 2.2.3-ac4 kernel I get the following message (I had to write
it down so it isn't the whole message... let me know if there are portions
that are more helpful).
Machine check in kernel mode.
Caused by (from msr): regs c055ddc0 Machine check signal - probably due to
mm fault with mmu off
TASK = c055c000[1] 'swapper' mm->pgd c00dc000 Last syscall:120

I had got this king of message while trying to boot the 2.2.1 last week.
Problems were happening duing "machine check in kernel mode" and were in some
init_* function like "serial" or "rtc". The only thing i've done is removing
them from the main kernel (module or out), and it was fine.
